I don't think there are printer that can use USB 2.0 anyway. None of
them prints fast enough to outpace USB 1.1. so cheap Dollar Store
cable should be fine.

Well may not need 2.0 data rates but how do you stop one using 2.0? I
mean...

I thought all USB cables are wired the same but the quality was different?
In which case can how does your PC know that the cable you use only works
reliably at 1.1 data rates? Can you force a printer to use USB 1.1 rates if
it and your PC both support 2.0 rates?

This is common with many printer these days...

Sometimes you get TWO...

When I collected my HP the man handed me a cable and said something like...
"They're so cheap I don't bother to look in the box to see if they come
with one". It did.

It's automatic. The USB controller on devices including the printer
basically tells the computer they can talk at 1.1 speed.

Generally USB 2.0 cables have ferrite core for noise filter but under
normal circumstances USB 1.1 cables will work fine at 2.0 speed.

If the PC and the device have trouble talking at 2.0 speed, it will
talk more slowly. And if the device is capable of supporting 2.0
speed, Windows will alert you that the device will perform faster if
you used 2.0 hardware.

Maybe with really cheap cable. Or use USB 1.1 hub, they forced the PC
to communicate at 1.1 only and any devices connected to that hub are
also forced to 1.1 as well.

USB 1.1 hub can be found cheaply nowday, I've seen them for about $10
for bus powered in the Laptop section. You can probably find them for
less online.

Not the ones I have. They apparetly have better sheilding though.
The only one I have with a choke is for my camera, and its definately
1.1.

It doesn't. Certification simply means that particular cable will work
at USB2.0, not that non certified cables won't.

If you are going to spend that, might as well pop for the usb2.0
certified cable.
