It appears that the Pixma range of printers do not
include the USB cables in the box. This appears to be
the only connectivity to a PC.
What are the alternatives for shopping for the requisite cable?

Hit your local biglots store if you have one $5.00 the last time I
checked. There where some places that offered cheaper cables on the
net but I can't remember where.

This is not a great deal as it's $5.00 to ship. But if your stuck
buying from radioshack or compusa for $20.00 it's an improvement.

This is common with many printer these days... brick & mortar stores use
cables and other required accessories as a major profit center, since their
margins on the "big ticket" items (e.g., the printer itself) are often rather
thin due to significant competition.

I like www.cyberguys.com -- good prices, good service!

Just went through this. Check: Pcmicrostore.com

you are looking for PCMS USB 2.0 A to B cable
6 foot is $1.50 and 10 ft is $2.00. At the time I
got mine shipping was free and I believe it still
is on these cables.

In town look at BigLots--they may or may not have
the cables. Also try Target if they have them on
sale.

My BigLots did have some on sale and now have
none. When I asked the question about a month
ago, Target had them at $10 each. Last Saturday
they had them on the close out table for $1.98 and
10 foot extensions for $2.98.

Best place is still pcmicrostore.com. By the way
the shipping was free, I ordered on fri or sat and
the package arrived by tuesday. Incredible service.

4 metal coat hangers, wire cutter, and some careful work to connect
the correct pins on both the printer and your PC's USB port.

Or just head to any stores that has computer stuff and look for a $10
USB cable.

What model do you have? My Pixma4000 has a Parallel port which I am
using.
BTW, I don't know of any manufacturer that packages a connecting cable
with their printers.

Some people don't like to pay $10 for a $1.50 item.

Actually many PC's don't have a parallel port, so
the parallel port on the 4000 may be a waste.

To answer your question, just look at the printer
boxes, which usually says what is included.
Nearly all HP consumer printers include a USB cable.

Dollar store has them. Sure they are not 2.0 "certified", but IME, they
work just as well.

I don't think there are printer that can use USB 2.0 anyway. None of
them prints fast enough to outpace USB 1.1. so cheap Dollar Store
cable should be fine.

Search www.shopper.com www.newegg.com www.cyberguys.com www.ebay.com
and www.yahoo.com

You will want to look for a $1-2 price max for a 6' USB 2.0 cable -
remember, they're all mostly made in china at OEM prices of well under
$0.50 per cable. Anything else, like walking into a store and paying
$20-40 for one, is JUST PLAIN STUPID.

If you're smarter still and actually read www.fatwallet.com/c/18/
daily, you'll note that they've had sales where you actually make money
(that's right, buy a cable and get money back! haa haa).

eg. http://www.fatwallet.com/t/18/491382/ this expired deal where you
got $2 back for buying a cable!
