I am looking to upgrade my PC As quite frankly its terrible.

Processor: Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 2.00GHz
Memory: 512MB RAM
GeForce2 Ti
Motherboard Intel D845HV

Its a miracle it still runs half life 2 demo, rome total war and call of duty. But it came unstuck today when i tried to play battlefield 2 demo and it just kept crashing to the desktop

I have been on some other forums but have been getting mixed messages about what is best. Some say Scap the lot and get a new one , some say get a new Graphics card / cpu and motherboard, other say a graphics card and a stick of ram.

I really dont have a clue about this sort of thing or about how much its going to cost. I have a limited budget of around £ 200

Any help or advice would be really apreciated

Take no notice get yourself another 512 mb of ram and a 6600gt graphics card and you will be laughing....:D

I play every game i own on my sisters old 1400xp and a 6600gt and half life 2 played perfectly....

If you have around £200 to spend i would get a nice new graphics card, and maybe a new Processor.
If/when you can afford get another MoBo later on

Graphics (APG)

Processors (Skt 478)

http://www.aria.co.uk/ProductInfoComm.asp?ID=8071 (Check what "FSB" or front speed bus your MoBo supports before going for this, 3.0 GHz and above is enough power though)

Hope that helps pls let me know if you need more suggestions/support

What PSU (Power Supply) do you have?

Cheers

Mikey

I agree, maybe another Processor is a bit OTT, my mate who has my old machine is running on 2.0ghz and a Rad 9700 Pro - runs everything fine

not sure what the power supply is, how do i find out ?

Its just a long shot this one, when upgrading just be wary that your PSU maybe a bit dated and check there will be enough power to run your new components.
However if you get another stick of RAM and a 6600gt graphics the one you have should be sufficient

If you have a tower the PSU is normally on the top left (what you plug your "kettle lead" into) If you can remove the side pannel of your pc check in the top left and your PSU should have a wattage, something like 350w or 350watts, if its 300/350 and above your fine

i dont think the motherboard will accept a faster CPU, so your stuck with the one you've got untill you decide to upgrade the motherboard, im also not sure if your motherboard has an 8X AGP slot so a 6600GT might not be worth it, another 512MB of RAM is a definate thing to get

check your AGP slot by downloading the following unzipping the file and running 'CPUZ' then click the mainboard tab, at the bottom it will say what version and transfer rate you have

naturally, the specs every one will tell you to get mostly consist of
a 6600GT, 512mb-1gig of ram
and thier right :)

squiz... your in the same scenario as me!!

but i've decided to flog my current rig and start a new build :D

if you don't want to do this then you may be better off with a Radeon 9800 pro and another 512MB of ram... the gfx is about £80 on overclockers... and can handle most of the current games as well :)

For the money, best solution so far, imo.

9800 Pro and another 512 memory, you shouldn't have any probs with HL2 and most games.

right thanks alot , i think that what i will do :)

Quick question , if i have sdr ram is it allright if i have a ddr card ?

i was going to say that but you beat me to it :thumb:

i know this is a little off subject but seeing as we've advised him ;) i thought rather than starting a new post i would just post on this one :)

basically i was just wondering what is better? a standard 6800 or a 6600gt? when i searched google i got alot of mixed opinions... so what ya think :p

it depends on the cards you get, if you get a leadtek 6600GT TDH that will beat the 6800 no problem, but the 6800 may be one that can overclock like mad then the 6800 will start beating it, either way their both good but the 6600GT would be the one i'd go for

with RAM... if i was to get 2x512MB sticks... does it matter if they are a different make?? or do they have to be identicle to worl together... like SLi ??
