Upgrading Computer

Yeah, i like the sound of the lifetime warranty, also, would it be wiser if i purchased a 1GB stick, as if i have 2 slots and put another one in the future it will save a bit of money?

2 512mb will run faster than 1 1gb stick, but if you are definately going to upgrade later on you may as well buy a 1gb stick

How effectively much faster will it run, because i could just buy 2x512 then get 2x1gb and put the 2x512mb in a new system or something????

I'll be honest Nath, with that computer I think you will be wanting to totally upgrade it before thinking about installing another gig, frankly it would be a waste at the current spec.

Any future PC you buy is likely to need higher spec RAM anyway.

Its always better to install modules in pairs if you can.

Ok Ok, leave my comp alone, i'll get 2x512mb modules untill after xmas when i can afford 2 get a new system built for me

Nath, I wasn't having a go at your PC - I'm just trying to give honest advice:)

Thats fine, but its more expensive than the Corsair I suggested earlier;)

Get DDR400 (PC3200) if you can - no more expensive, backwards compatible and more mainstream than PC2700.

Don't bin what you have! post it to me :D

Good point well made Chris - missed that one :o - and it will solve his future upgrade dilemma:thumb:

Thats what i originally thought i needed was the pc3200 or whatever

Thanks for letting us know:rolleyes:

I recommended the PC2700 because thats what your current set-up and mobo is happy with and it is what you originally asked for - the PC3200 won't perform any better in your current set-up, in fact it may perform fractionally worse - however go for the 2 x 512GB PC3200 DDR400 and it will be good should you decide to use it in a future system upgrade.

Yep, kingwotsit, listen to Ady, he speak sense.

Why buy Crucial from E-Buyer when it be same price or even less direct from Crucial? And with guaranteed next day service and good rma policy as well. Unlike e-buyer. Hmm.

In my experience higher-clocked RAM won't run any worse in a motherboard that will only handle lesser settings, it will obviously just revert to lower settings.

Just buy the Corsair Value select PC3200 and be a happy bunny :)

And if you want to unload your old 256Mb stick, I suggest you have a look at the crunching section of the thread and donate it to a new crunching machine for this Forum's team effort via Mucks.

But only if you you want to. Of course :)

I was also thinking about getting another hard drive to go in my current pc, something like 120gb, i dont really understand the slave and master set-up jobby, but my current 60gb hdd i persume is the master, so if i plugged in another, that would be the slave?, i just want some extra internal storage for music, pics, vidoes etc?? any help & ideas would be great, i think i would be looking at an IDE hdd?

the 60GB drive would be the master and the second the slave, you need to put the 60GB drive on the end of the ribbon and the slave on the middle (i think) also you need to set the jumpers on the back of the drives to their relevant positions

for an extra £10-15 you can get a 200GB drive instead of a 120GB

so basically, its a little bit on the back of the hdd that needs moving? will this just be on the new hdd or the current 1 also?
