The boot.ini file is not gone. It is on your XP partition. It just is not
used by Vista. Why are you having a problem with our answers?

no, i'm not really, i just would like to know all the ways do it the
operation i guess besides the laptop with vista on it does not have a dvd
burner it (to tell the person who offered that idea. thanks anyway).

yes the boot.ini file is gone. well, at least from where it was last
located. would the vista installation moved it to a new location?

since the boot.ini file is gone now, can i just copy it over from another
pc and then delete the vista partition. would the new boot manager still
be active if i remove vista? and if so, how do i make modifications to
it?

Boot into XP, open My Computer, select the drive Vista is installed on,
right click it, click Format.

And if you want to get rid of everything Vista left behind on your XP
drive, see here
http://www.tech-recipes.com/microsoft_vista_tips1040.html about
rewriting the MBR and the boot sector.

i installed vistabootpro and it keeps getting this error that says it needs
for it to close but it will aloow you to continue if you really want to. why
do you get this issue?

what happened to the boot.ini file? it seems to have disapeared when i
installed vista on the 2nd hard drive.

It is where it was before you installed Vista.
Vista added two lines of text to your XP boot.ini - see yourself.

Installed it where? XP like I told you?

When you are XP run msconfig. You will see the boot.ini tab.

I have not seen reports of this issue. Uninstall, download again and
install the fresh download. That type of error message suggests a
corruption.

i have a few computers with xp on them and the boot.ini file was either in
"c:\" or in "c:\windows". maybe it just got moved to the root dirrectory of
windows.

Where do you suppose the boot.ini tab in msconfig got its data?

Another way:

From XP CMD prompt:
<drive letter of the VISTA DVD>:\boot\bootsect /nt52 <drive letter of XP>:
Note space between nt52 and drive letter

or (long explanation)

"How to clean the Vista install.

Step by step.

1. Boot to XP
2. got to a CMD prompt ( start --> run --> type cmd and press OK (or run)
3. in cmd window type “cd\boot” (without the quotes!)
4. put DVD from Vista in DVD drive
5. don’t let install run close that screen (red X right top)
6. type “X:\boot\bootsect /nt52 c:” (where X is the drive letter from the DVD reader)
7. reboot the PC it should load XP by default now (entry’s from Vista are gone)
8. after reboot delete the folder boot in your XP drive (it is in the root of the drive)
9. you may delete all the files ending at .BAK in the root also
10. that’s all to do to clean out
11. Format the partition holding Vista to get a clean install again

Now you are ready to give the new version a clean start."

the boot.ini file. the file could have been moved.

So, LOOK FOR THE FILE!!!.

Enter "boot.ini" as the search term in XP Search, and make sure you
set Search to check in hidden and system folders.

If Search fails to find the file, then try this:

Boot XP from the XP installer disk, choose the first opportunity to
"Repair", go to the Repair Console, then
