No, not Ubuntu, but Suse Linux 10.1 which offers no more advantages than any
Windows counterpart, and certainly less with regard to what other software
applications one can run..

FWIW, I do you Knoppix live to check intransigent systems on occasion..

Try the Ubuntu live CD and get back to me. It has really come a long
way. I really love the email program.

Does anyone know if the Vista prices on mainland Europe are more in line
with the USA prices or whether they have the UK rip-off as well?
Alan

UK rip off? hahahaha.. make your way to the Chunnel.. Sangatte awaits you
with open arms, a pack of Gauloises and the best bread anywhere..

The European prices are a little more inlinewith the US
As was stated in another post the starting point for UK pricing is 1
pound = 1 dollar, now as the same occurs in Europe but a number of
them are on Euros which is more closely tracking the dollar rates the
prices are more in line with the US.

Makes you wonder if MS and the Corp. Boys are behind the weak dollar. As
one dollar will only get you 78 euro cents, MS products are 22% higher
plus 16 or 17% VAT in mainland Europe.

It will not work with a Dell or Hanns-G DVI monitor... I just tried it
again today. It works on my analog montor no problem.
Dell card Nvivia GeForce FX 5200, Hanns-G card, ATI Radeon X600..

Linux is not the answer for the majority of home users..

No, but a Mac is. And £369 isn't far off getting you a copy of leopard when
it's launched, probably in january, with a free mac mini thrown in for good
measure to run it on.

I'd agree with Alias. You really need to try the latest version of Ubuntu
before you judge it on the merits of Suse Linux.

The actual retail market for operating systems is tiny.

The vast majority of end users either receive the OS with the PC (an
OEM copy) or are technically savvy enough to purchase their OS for a
machine they build themselves as an OEM (usually with a piece of
hardware) or those users will a current OS may buy the upgrade (again
a small market)

So the actual market for full retail product is low.
Effectively that purchaser is either:
*buying an OS less machine and buying an OS for it (unlikely and
costly/pointless)

Mabey not common but certainly not costly or pointless:

Not relevent since we are talking about Windows here and the purchase
of Windows.

I guess you are right. Being costly is not relavent to any other x86
OS. Being pointless is not relevent to any other x86 OS either.

Well, Amazon UK had Full Ultimate edition for £325.00 (it's now been pulled
from the site). But PC World have it for pre-order on their site for the
absolute bargain (!) price of £369.00!! That's over $700!

At this price, I can't see many UK buyers getting it

MSFT may not be behind this all it could well be that the retailers are
behind this, it is not at all uncommon for retailers and major importers
to cash in on exchange rate differences

Check this out: http://www.ubuntu.com/ I ran the Live CD on an old HP
with an AMD Athlon 800 Mhz with 512MB PC-133 RAM and it recognized all
the hardware and, best of all, they ship the CD to you free and you can
install it on as many computers as you like.

I have Ubuntu running and I'm actually posting here with it now, it is
totally awesome
I have an app called beryl running on it and it is a lot better than aero
however I'm still sticking with windows for now but I expect to be running
ubuntu 100% all the time in the next year or so

and yes the hardware detection is great it even recognised my DVB-T tuner
card and I can watch digital television on it

Ubuntu does not work with digital monitors.. It will not install with a DVI
connection.

Yes it does I have a dvi connection and it all works fine although it
didn't let me connect to my television screen but I fixed that by
installing the latest nvidia driver
