Today I learned...

I want to hear that pronounced :D

Let's make it easier:

Bundes|präsidenten|stichwahl|wiederholungs|verschiebung

http://www.duden.de/rechtschreibung/Stichwahl
http://www.duden.de/rechtschreibung/Wiederholung

And further down:
Bundes|präsident
Stich|wahl
Wieder|holung
Ver|schiebung

Duden is a great resource — provided that you speak German. HERE (provided by TU Chemnitz) is a good English <——> German dictionary.

TIL that there are only four basic words in the English language that begin with Dw :D

They are dwarf, dwell, dwindle and dwine. There are, of course, derivations from these such as dwelling, dwarfism etc.

I had to look up dwine as I'd never heard it before and it means to waste, or pine away. I also found a few weird words, dwale (another word for deadly nightshade), dwam (a stupor or daydream) and dwang (another name for nogging [a horizontal timber in a wooden partition]) but these three seem to be of Northern European origin and are barely used.

So endeth the lesson for today. :D

you know, I now visit here first before visiting Mr Google if I'm looking for obscure ... stuff.

Today I learned that living in close proximity to a busy road may increase your chance of developing dementia

The study looked at over 2 million people, and was adjusted for factors such as neighbourhood income levels etc.

The researchers suggest noise, ultrafine particles, nitrogen oxides and particles from tyre-wear may be involved.

However, the study looks only at where people diagnosed with dementia live. It cannot prove that the roads are causing the disease.

Fascinating!

... dig up all the roads, plant trees, get a horse-n-cart ... no more dementia. :)

... may increase your chance of developing dementia

Cure: SAUNA

The more frequently saunas were taken, the lower was the risk of dementia. Among those taking a sauna 4–7 times a week, the risk of any form of dementia was 66% lower and the risk of Alzheimer’s disease 65% lower than among those taking a sauna just once a week. The findings were published recently in the Age and Ageing journal.
