The value in John's service is that he's done the work for me.

I suggest you provide him with your e-mail address, so that he may do so

John's providing a service:

- marking a post spam
- identifying spam's originating host

I know how to source spam but often, in acf, I don't bother. The value
in John's service is that he's done the work for me. I really don't see
a problem w/what John is providing other than the "annoyance issue," and
that can be filtered by the offended, no?

Well said.

And, as usual, it is suggested that you killfile him once and for all and
stop troubling the rest of us with your incessant stalking and whining.

Why don't you mark this as off-topic in the subject line for people who
filter to omit off-topic posts?

And why didn't YOU post that request to the OP, instead of boasting into a
thread in progress?

Have a good day, nevertheless...

So now Corliss is Batman and you are his sidekick supporter Robbin?

Correct spelling is "Robin" FWIW
MEN IN TIGHTS! HA!

John Jay, why is it that you are always so cynical in your replies? Lack
of selfesteem? Depression? Didn't take the medication???

I disagree on many things with JC, but if it weren't for these spam
reports, I can assure you that this NG would be a greater mess than it is
at "vacation-time"... Yes, his *SPAM* posts are of value, and you better
understand that, and respect the man for the effort he takes to keep this
NG free of this junk!!!

The only posts he marks as spam are his own.

Yep, that is one flaw... he forgets yours; perhaps he does like you after
all... ;P

Now, if you would follow your own advise, and would kindly stop wasting
our time and bandwidth with your comments, Andy... we all would be better
off.

Respect Coriliss? He is worse than the spammers!

There is nothing more annoying than having someone in a newsgroup
dictating what you have do to...

He is not only fighting spam FYI, but whatever HE doesn't agree with!

Spammers come and go.. but he is here all the time...

Nothing is more annoying that someone whining about imaginary
problems. Ok, maybe some things are more annoying than that.

Like closing your AOL account for one.

He doesn't do that. No one does that.

I'm not complaining about your anti-spam methods but I would like to
point out that it's a waste of time. Most spam is constructed with
fake headers.

I've been fighting spam for several years now and can usually tell when
this is the case. Besides, I find that most (usenet) spam *isn't*
constructed with fake headers. In order for the spam to be effective,
there's always a clue in the message somewhere that leads to the spammer.

And I'm referring only to usenet spam, not email spam.
Abuse addresses may be correct but the majority will be
ignored because hosting companies know that spammers just move on.

I can also tell when this isn't going to be the case. Especially when it
comes to shutting down a website.
Spam won't stop being sent so your only option is make sure it is sent
in the wrong direction. Use a redirected real address rather than a
fake one and most of your spam will never arrive. Note that I am
posting this message with a real address but I don't get much spam at
all.

Email spam isn't a concern of mine since I use a randomized sequence of
alphanumeric characters in my main email address and judiciously use a
Yahoo account for communicating with businesses. There are other steps I
take as well, but I won't go into them here.

I post to usenet with a fake email address and that's one of the main
tactics everybody should use to avoid having their email address get
harvested.

Yes, but most ISP just close down a token few so they can claim to be
anti spam.

True, but like I said before it doesn't help much at all.

Based on what? My experience, and I have TONS of it, is that it DOES
help, tremendously, to fight usenet spam.
In fact some
ISP refuse to act because they leave themselves open to legal action.

That's your opinion and I find it to be untrue in my experience.
Legally, NO ISP is open to legal action for enforcing their TOS. At
least any ISP that resides in a civilized country.

At this point in fact, the main offender as far as not enforcing their
TOS is Google.

Good point, Franklin, and it was my bad. So here goes...

Thanks, but people should note that by far, I'm not the only person
fighting spam in this group. Many others routinely send complaints to
ISPs and hosts as well, but most don't post replies which list the
addresses for sending the complaints to. This used to be a more common
practice in this group (my tactic, that is), but because a lot of
newsfeeds are now filtering out spam very effectively, you see a lot
less of it.

People who can't tell from the spam itself where to send abuse reports
shouldn't rely on your replies, though.

Why should they not? I've already done the legwork for them.
This makes your replies to the
spam useless noise, and useless noise is why we don't like spam in the
first place.

That's why killfiles were invented. As I've already said several times,
a filter based on the inclusion of:

*SPAM*

in the subject line is very effective. If somebody is too freaking lazy
to spend a few seconds creating that filter, then they have no excuse to
whine.

I've had Mabbett killfiled for a long time. That's yet another reason
his stalking is so absurd: I never see his spew anyway. And what you
can't see, you can't mark. 80)>
