Why not do it in alt.comp.freeware?

Susan
Susan,
If you ever want to have a personal life, you'd best take an eraser and
rub out that last post. You know I'm not going to do all that work and I
know exactly who would get cornered to do it. Turn off that 'puter and
go take a walk until this thread pitters away,

Wonder where they got the idea for this from.......\

That would be difficult to say since collection CD's have been being
produced since the days of DOS previous to Windows.

You want to start a project? Seriously, I'd very much agree that a CD of
OpenSource (or freeware) software development tools would be a great idea.

A great resource was the BURKS (Brighton University Resource Kit For
Students) which was a 4 CD set (http://burks.brighton.ac.uk/) but hasn't
been updated since 2001. It contained a vast range of compilers for
languages from Ada to Haskell and vast amounts of tutorials. Available
on-line or purchase very cheaply. I'm not aware of anything similar that's
current/up-to-date nor any current similar project. Maybe we all need to
email the OpenCD.org with suggestions!

Gordon

I agree, a programming CD would be cool but be warned that a CD that either
competes against pricelessware's cd or does not get started with the
consensus of the group will get the acf police after ya! ;-)

That would be a disaster in the making. Ought to fix the problems
with your current project first.

Why don't you start the project yourself? That way, you can be sure it
will be perfect from start to finish. :)

No need that I can see for me to be involved in *this* project, If the
participants wanted a web page on the PW site I could upload it. . .

Is this group moving into "other than freewarez" territory now?

I like it! :) :) :)

FYI - your web page froze Mozilla in its tracks - I got there via NS

First it has to be nominated. . . ;)

For anyone who is are wondering about this program. . .

http://www.shatters.net/celestia/

Celestia is a free real-time space simulation that lets you experience
our universe in three dimensions. Unlike most planetarium software,
Celestia doesn't confine you to the surface of the Earth. You can travel
throughout the solar system, to any of over 100,000 stars, or even
beyond the galaxy. All travel in Celestia is seamless; the exponential
zoom feature lets you explore space across a huge range of scales, from
galaxy clusters down to spacecraft only a few meters across. A
'point-and-goto' interface makes it simple to navigate through the
universe to the object you want to visit.

Celestia 1.3.1 29 Dec 2003
Just in time for the new year, Celestia 1.3.1 is ready

http://www.shatters.net/celestia/download.html

Windows Binary Package (11 megabytes) : celestia-win32-1.3.1-1.exe
If want to run Celestia on Windows 95, 98, ME, 2000, XP, or NT 4.0, this
is the only file you need.

http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/celestia/celestia-win32-1.3.1-1.exe

If you have a graphics card with less than 16 megs of memory, the
Celestia package with low resolution textures is only 4.5 megabytes and
will run better on your system.

http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/celestia/celestia-lores-win32-1.3.0.exe

versions also available for Linux and MacOS X

Susan

Let me be the first to nominate Celestia then.)

awesome program! reminds a little of microsofts space simulator for
dos but better )

Apparently, you're not reading the same newsgroup I'm reading.
So, I believe I'll wipe you from the bottom of my shoes and leave you
behind me.

Good luck with all your problems.

IMO a little competitive spirit is good - that was just my own personal
*totally* *unbiased* opinion. YMMV ;)

hmmm. . . IMO the PW CD is also an evangelical tool - for ACF.

I agree! :)

Susan

I didn't notice the acf faq on my download ;-)))

Surprised that Celestia isn't Pricelessware. It's the most amazing
program I've ever seen on a personal computer. YMMV
From the readme :
"Basic Hacking Tips:
It's possible to modify the solarsys.ssc, stars.dat, and hdnames.dat
files to create an entirely fictional universe.
Etc ..."

Just imagine programming gravitational fields into this prog, and
setting up some Interstellar collisions!
Wow!
