For someone who has no idea of searching a text pattern in a document,
writing just the word "grep" might not help.

This is a file manager, Total Commander (www.ghisler.com) that has text
searching built-in. If you eventually learn the Regular Expression,
it's also available as an advanced option. Use <Alt>-<F7> to search
text.

Grep will work with plain text or pattern search. And, as WGrep,
WinGrep or any other name it goes by, it has a nice GUI.

I use
SuperFinder
Copernic Desktop Search

Fair enough, but since the original poster wanted to search documents,
it's highly likely his extension will be either .txt, .doc, or such.

I am not sure the price is all that relevant to us here because it
can be obtained for free although it will put up a nag box when it's
launched.

So it's nagware rather than freeware. Having said that, I find that
it is one of the least troublesome nagwares I've used.

See here for example:

Have I understood that method correctly? The user has to enable the
Windows indexing service in order to include unkown extensions in the F3
search?

If so, then enabling indexing seems like a high price to pay for this
extra functionality!

I've understood so me too.

Exactly, I'd never do it!
Because of that we _search_ other utilities to search in XP ;-)

If anyone really needs it, I'll put an executable of WinGrep on my
site for download. It's old, primitive, fast and searches any and/or
all files.
