Well, i ran ad-aware se. it found and removed 1600 items. went to control
panel and unlocked (again) the taskbar, added quick launch and was able to
resize for appearance. but,...there's still something wrong. system
continues to stall at welcome screen (30sec) and desktop before loading icons
(60sec). can see network, add printers, start Windows Firewall (msg: Win
Firewall settings can't be displayed because the associated svc isn't
running.) I try to start ICS svc, but windows tells me it can't start it.
In control panel, network connections is blank; network setup wizard won't
start; user accts comes up blank; and Spyware Doctor still won't run, so i
uninstalled it. still unable to use mail, gmail, hotmail and/or yahoo. i've
been using my 2000 computer to access the internet, but it can't see the XP.
i ran HijackThis and posted the log to the forum. don't know what else to
do. Thanks,

Hi bronxbabe;

.. First of all provide me with the link to see the HijackThis Log.

.. Do another check in msconfig and the Run registry keys just in case.

.. Go to the firewall service and g into the Dependencies tab; On the top box
are the services that the firewall service depends on, make a paper note of
them and see if all are running, and start any that is not... that's because
if one of those services is not running it can affect the firewall service,
also check that you don't have any non-system service added.. (many programs
install their own services and once you remove the programs the services
remain in the system causing nothing but trouble). See below for a way to
solve the firewall not running problem.

.. Resetting the Winsock can help with the Internet connection, if the manual
method does not work, use LSP-fix (link below) and just double click on it
and delete anything that comes up in the right panel, it nothing just close
it.

.. Do an online virusscan and read for other malware methods to clean
possible hiding malware.

.. Read the 310353 and 308041 KB articles to perform a clean boot and
determine what causes the long boot problem, but spyware can cause it too,
so the problem can remain until you get rid of all hiding spyware

Hi bronxbabe; Read your HijackThis log and, Wow! You really have about 30
startup programs which is around 25 in excess, and about 16 non-system
services... that is what makes the boot time so long, you need to shut down
startup programs in Start\Run\msconfig\enter\startup and to be more
specific, you should remove a few programs, so remove those you don't need
much... and delete the values in the Run keys,

1) disable programs in msconfig\startup
2) delete values in the Run keys
3) uninstall a few programs
4) disable non-system services and delete after from the registry
5) delete registry keys for programs that you already have unistalled.
HijackThis should be useful to delete services, values in the Run keys and
extra Internet Explorer toolbars*
*Some toolbars are hijackers even if they seem legitimate, for example Yahoo
tool bar (which you don't have just an example) MSN toolbar not a hijacker
as such but just as intrusive.. I saw a few Real elements in the HijackThis
log.. I suppose they are from Real Player? if so, those are spyware...
You also have multiple eTrust and MaCafee antiviruses objects, too many for
each antivirus, it makes me wonder if you have installed each anitivirus
several times?

So what you should do in HijackThis is do a scan and add to the Ignored List
all those services, programs and other processes you want to keep, and do
another scan and delete away all those processes which are just causing
problems... Uninstall programs first, make it those programs you don't rally
need, and those which are known to cause problems like the Real Player, one
extra antivirus, unnecessary services and those leftover from already remove
programs. The Windows firewall may be down because the firewall service is
probably disabled by an antivirus firewall service has disabled it. The
Internet Connection is also disabled by programs which you already have
removed which may have corrupted the Winsock, you may not be able to reset
it because something is preventing you from doing it.
And you can't run programs probably because the system memory is so crowded
and slow there is no space for them and they can't load.
So you really need to do some cleaning to lighten up your system and make it
boot up faster and then run lighter.

As for the in place upgrade, which you probably mean in place repair install
(?) I don't think would do much good, startup programs, registry keys,
running services, toolbars, etc. would remain in the system... I would
recommend you do a clean installation of Windows XP that would mean you need
to backup your files and settings with the File and Settings Transference
Wizard in Start\Programs\Accessories\System Tools\File and Settings
Transference Wizard... Run this wizard and select those files and settings
including mail and news files, mail accounts, etc. you can backup just about
everything except programs, so backup the program keys so you can reinstall
them if you decide to do a clean installation of XP.
You can save the transference file package(s) in another partition if you
have another, and format the C:\when installing XP, and remember to create
at least four partitions total, you can install XP on a 20GB partition and
later divide one other partition for a total of four primary partitions and
you can later install or best yet if you already have a partition available
you can install XP on that partition to have your system programs and have a
normal working system... you can later format the partition where the system
is now or do a repair installation and hope it comes out right. You can
have a double boot system with two copies of XP with the same product key on
different partitions and it's perfectly legal. So do as I said above and
see how the system lightens up, and take it from there and do a new second
installation.

Yes, Dell is correct to assume that the main problem may remain in the
system because a reinstallation only deletes and renews the operative system
files and programs and does not delete personal files, third party
applications or viruses and Trojans.... but I believe there is a possibility
the Java items you deleted and possibly some remaining may have deleted or
corrupted system files, and that may be causing the problems you are
experiencing, and a re-installation may correct the problem but you first
need to do a thorough cleanup to free-up system memory...

I took a careful look at the HijackThis log you posted at
http://aumha.net/viewtopic.php?t=17826 and found that about 70 objects need
to be deleted... many of them are not malware but are not necessary either
and only take up system resources... and that is at least part of your
problem.. That is probably the cause your computer takes long to boot and
has no memory left to process programs and settings.

Following this, I will post another response pointing out the processes you
need to disable/delete to unload the memory.

Some information on Java security issues which can be corrected with the
latest version of that application.

---This can be caused by low available memory.

"start Windows Firewall (msg: Win Firewall settings can't be displayed

windows tells me it can't start it. "

--- The cause is the: 023 - Service: McAfee Personal Firewall Service
(MpfService) - McAfee Corporation - you need to disable it to have the
Windows Firewall service running.

"In control panel, network connections is blank; network setup wizard won't

--Trojans are known to delete files so your system may be missing needed
files to load these up and running.

--- It would take about 45 minutes to do a reinstallation and XP does about
all, you only have to do a few things and in less than an hour you may have
it working like new and if not, you will have lost about an hour which
nothing compared to the time you have spent trying to solve the problem.

A clean installation with a previous format would be best recommended but
you may have programs that you want to keep or avoid the hassle it takes to
get everything back up and running... so you may want to try the repair
installation (reinstallation) and hope for the best... the most you can
loose is about an hour and it the problem persists a clean installation
would definetly resolve the problem.

It that is what you decide, first disable/delete the following processes,
values and services.

1) Press F8 when the computer starts and select Safe Mode... next go to
2) Start\Run\msconfig\startup; uncheck processes ...
3) Start\Run\services.msc\ disable third party services
4) Start\Run\regedit\ go to the Run keys and delete values
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
5) Run HijackThis and delete the rest and go to Config...\Backups\ and
delete the backups.

The following items are not necessary and some may even be hijackers and
spyware or act like such, particularly the tool bars.. so disable or delete
some and definetly delete others.

spoke with Dell. we went through their standard troubleshooting
procedures (checking hard drive integrity, going into setup and
resetting factory default settings), but still nothing. they
seemed sure it is a virus and suggested i use their on-call
service, which they assured would fix my problem (for a nominal
fee of course). i also spoke with Computer Associates about my
eTrust software (which finds 35 infected Java items, but doesn't
correct them). We deleted all those Java files, but still no
luck. by the way, Dell states that if i reinstall my operating
system, drivers, utilities, etc..., unless the virus was
corrected, my system will continue to act funky.
Is this correct? Otherwise, I'm out of luck, since neither
McAfee nor
eTrust EZ Antivirus corrects and/or finds the problem. Please
share your thoughts. Thanks as always.

It appears that some critical services are no longer starting.

Try this:
Click on "Start"
Click on "run"
Type "cmd" into the run box
At the "command prompt" type the following hitting the "Enter" key
after each:
regsvr32 softpub.dll
regsvr32 wintrust.dll
regsvr32 initpki.dll
regsvr32 dssenh.dll
regsvr32 rsaenh.dll
regsvr32 gpkcsp.dll
regsvr32 sccbase.dll
regsvr32 slbcsp.dll
regsvr32 cryptdlg.dll

Re-start your computer and see if things improve enough to clean
out the "critters".

tried, but don't work. each time i type in the command (at the C:\Documents
and Settings\Home) prompt, i get a message "warning me that i'm trying open a
file type "Application Extension" (.DLL). these files are used by other
operating system and by various programs.... Open With or Cancel." 4:41PM
