Taskbar Missing

My windows, welcome screen and desktop icons load slow, start menu and
taskbar has disappeared. I've only been able to go online by using My
Computer "unused desktop shortcuts". I tried to copy files/folders to a
CD/DVD for backup purposes since this happened, but am unable to do so. Any
idea why this happened? I can't access this link on that computer, update
and run my Mcafee viruscan from their site, etc. My computer "will" go to
sites, but links aren't happening. HELP!!!

Use the Windows logo key to have the Start Menu and taskbar come to view and
go to the control panel and open Taskbar and Start Menu to remove check on
Hide taskbar automatically and check on Keep taskbar always visible. Then
install antispyware programs to get rid of possible spyware infection.

tried that already. doesn't work. can't install or run any programs. the
closest i can get to my programs is through run, browse, all users, start
menu, pgm files, etc. but even with that, i just can't perform any actions.
when i try to run windows media, i am not getting a msg saying not enough
memory. I JUST DON'T KNOW WHAT'S GOING ON. the last activity on my computer
is that my son downloaded a game on my 2000, xferred it to my XP (in guess to
burn it to a DVD), but after that, no START or task bar. Any other
suggestions? Thanks in advance.

tried kelly's korner "taskbar" link, but my computer won't respond when i
click links. absolutely nothing happens. i can't run or install anything AT
ALL! can't download or run any software. most of my programs won't run
properly. if i open a Word doc, it tells me there's no link to that doc. if
i try to run a win media files, no luck. win media won't launch. can't
print, save to disk, etc.... the most i can do is CTRL-E to get to my
computer. i'm now trying to send important files to myself over internet,
but that's taking some time and backend experience. ANY OTHER SUGGESTIONS?
Thanks in advance :(

You've got a scumware, spyware, adware or trojan problem... to clear the
computer enough to be able to download antispyware programs, go to
C:\WINDOWS\PCHealthHelpCtr\Binaries\MSConfig.exe (double click on
MSConfig.exe and go to the Startup tab and remove the check mark from any
unknown and suspicious process... normal processes in Msconfig\Startup are
the antivirus, msoffice taskbar, messenger and possibly CTFMON.. uncheck any
other process there, and next go to C:\WINDOWS\System32\ and look for
"regedt32.exe" and double click on it... and go to the Run key in

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run and

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run and look
also for suspicious unknown values... again normal system values are a
Default value, antivirus value(s) (one or two possibly), msoffice taskbar
value, messenger and CTFMON any other value there on any of the CurrentUser
or LocalMachine Run keys, is probably a spware and must be deleted. After
disabling any process in msconfig and deleting any other in the Run keys,
you should be able to download antispyware programs and perform a full
system scan to clean your computer from undesired scumware.

i ran xoftspy twice (found 892 items) and spybot (found 44 items), all of
which were deleted. Could not run SpyDoctor -- kept giving me an error
message to send report to PCTools, but can't send emails from internet.
can't access gmail, and all other emails programs (yahoo/hotmail, etc.) won't
allow me to compose new mail. after running both softwares, my [start, quick
launches, sys tray] taskbar is still missing. i also am unable to print
and/or see this particular XP computer from other network computers (2000 +
XP laptop). tried to at least save files/folders to CD/DVD with the idea to
revamp system, but am unable to cut/copy/paste any files/folders. just don't
know what the problem can be, especially after running both malware programs.
any other suggestions? i'm at my wits-end! thanks in advance :(

bronxbabe, your whole problem seems to be XOFTSPY.. it's a well known
unreliable "anti-spyware" that installs it's own or favored spyware.. you
need to remove it NOW to get rid of the source of all your problems. For

Any of the following options may help.
1) If you can get to Start\Run, type Control.exe
2) Or in the Windows Explorer open the Control Panel icon,
3) Go to C:\WINDOWS\System32\Control.exe
4) To access msconfig in order to disable the program go to
C:\WINDOWS\System32\msconfig.exe
5) Or download HijackThis and do a scan, check on the program and click on
Fix checked and next click on Config...\next Backups\select and delete.
6) Start\Run\type regedit or go to C:\WINDOWS\System32\Regedit32.exe and in
both the LocalMachine (HKLM) and CurrentUser (HKCU) hives go to the Run keys
and delete the program registry value. Look here:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
You will see a Default value, one or two antivirus values, values for the
msoffice taskbar, the messenger and the CTFMON value all of which are
normal, if any unknown value is present in any of both keys, delete it.

It's deleted, but still hasn't solved my problems. no taskbar/start. in
safe mode, there is no start/taskbar. why would i not be able to use any
hardware (CD-RWs, DVD-RWs and printers) or see other network computers? this
must be a deadly malware since spybot or Microsoft Malicious Removal software
hasn't helped. what next, outside of cutting my losses and reinstalling XP?
what's your thoughts of using kellys-korner's taskbar/start menu restore?
when i attempted, it asked if i wanted to add info in
C:\Docs~\Home\LocalSettings\Temp Int
Files\Content.IE5\KDUFWSAJ\nodesktop[1].reg to registry. I quit since I
wasn't sure whether to click YES or NO. Thanks again )

Have you rebooted the computer?, some fixes need a reboot to take effect. If
already rebooted and still don't have the taskbar visible, click on the
Windows Logo key and go to the Control Panel\Taskbar and Start Menu\and on
Taskbar tab check on Keep taskbar always visible and remove check from Hide
taskbar automatically. The Kelly's-Korner fixes are reliable but you should
not get the confirmation message with all those details it should only ask
for confirmation to be added to the registry not to a particular folder or
file... try the control panel correction first and use the "nodesktop.reg"
file if the control panel correction does not work, but right click on the
reg file to add it instead of double clicking on it.

As to using hardware, has the problem coincided with the spyware problem?
The hardware problems may be different causes; the Optical units use the
same driver so that driver could be corrupted and you may need to replace it
or the IDE digital wire band may be loose or damaged... look for the
driver(s) by CD-Writer or CD-ROM by make and model in a driver download site
like www.driverguide.com www.driver-downloads.com/ www.driverfiles.net/
The printer may also need a fresh driver or it may need to be reinstalled.

And the computer may need to be properly added to the network.. that can be
done in Control Panel\System\Computer name\and make the changes in the
Network ID and Change buttons.. all you need to do is type in the name used
for the network and the computer name and restart the computer. If it
doesn't work you may need to add your administrative user account to the
Network Settings Operators user group or a small change may need to be made
in the security policies.

Any of the following options may help.
1) If you can get to Start\Run, type Control.exe

(1) Yes, the computer has been rebooted; (2) the options in Taskbar were
unchecked; (3) the hardware problems and my inability to drag/drop files
began with the disappearance of the Taskbar.

Here's when it all began: on Thursday, my son moved a file over the network
from 2000 to XP shared docs folder. Minutes later, he tells me that my
start/taskbar is not there. I CTRL-ALT-DEL and shutdown, thinking it was
probably a temporary setback. The next day I realized it was serious when I
started the computer and it wasn't there. At that moment is when I realized
I could not save files from one area to another, print or be seen on the
network.

Now, i ran Kelly's-Korner to restore Taskbar/Start Menu. A fraction of the
taskbar was visible and after an hour, i was able to resize it to make it
visible, as normal. But,..., tried to add printer (got RPC error msg), tried
to reconnect to my network (Error Msg: Network Connections Folder unable to
retrieve list of network adapters), and whatever can go wrong, has gone
wrong. Upon reboot, it stalls at Welcome screen for 30 seconds and when it
gets to the desktop, it takes another 60 seconds before icons appear.
AND...the taskbar is gone again! The problem seems to be much bigger than
me. So, for the next couple of days, i will send myself my most important
files at work (to burn to CD) and after all files has been sent, i will
attempt to reinstall computer to factory settings.

Juan, thanks for checking back to see if i was still a trooper with all
this, but i think i should just throw my towel in. This Bronx babe has been
beat :( Thanks again )

p.s. although it's 11:59EST, i'll be up for a couple more hours attempting
my fate, but after that, IT'S QUITS!

Not Xoftspy that's for sure, Spybot and Spydoctor are ok and you should have
more than one antispyware anyway.... See the list malicious antispyware
list; Xoftspy is included.
