you may need to uninstall Version 8 and install Version 7.

I upgraded to 8.1.2 yesterday. As long as I was on the laptop it
continued to try to get on the internet. (I'd never have known without a
firewall.)

But apparently after rebooting 8.1.2 is no longer making the attempts.
Time will tell.

(I'm still on dial-up and I'm trying to get all the updaters to shut up so
it will disconnect the laptop automatically if I forget to disconnect.)

Wikipedia's breakdown seems to be accurate:

At Version 6, Acrobat Reader became Adobe Reader. To add to the
confusion, Adobe also has different versions of Acrobat. For now, just
think of Adobe Reader as something that can *only read* PDFs (Acrobat can
create them, too).

In that case, try this method posted by Robert Premuz:
Open the following file with a text editor (e.g. Notepad):
"%USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\Application
Data\Adobe\Updater5\AdobeUpdaterPrefs.dat"
(%USERPROFILE% is an environment variable in Windows 2000/XP/2003 that
points to the profile folder of the current user)
and change the line
<AutoCheck>1</AutoCheck>
into
<AutoCheck>0</AutoCheck>

<snip>

There was no autocheck line in that dat file. I put in a line with the
zero value. I haven't gotten reslts, yet, but I DID start having the
problem after I said (some dayas ago after updating to 8.1.2) that it
stopped, so I hope this does something for me. Thanks.
