Suggestions on a stand alone inkjet printer

I will use it mostly for text. I don't forsee using specialty paper
unless my teacher calls for it.

I would suggest if you were to go for an inkjet printer, you consider a
dye ink type. With printing on average once per day (and more likely it
will be more erratic), Durabrite inks are likely to clog the head.
Canon also has a number of mid-range inkjet printers using dye inks.

If you only need to print black and white text, I would suggest a laser
printer.

They now have small footprints, have become very reasonably priced, have
nearly zero maintenance issues, print well on inexpensive bond paper, do
not have to be "exercised" regularly to keep them functional, are
relatively fast, and cost per print is reasonable, and the laser is
relatively permanent, etc.

If you need color printing, consider a mid-priced (about $125-150)
inkjet printer. If permanence and waterproof ink are not key, a dye ink
printer will give you more reliable service, in general. Consider
Canon, Epson, or HP. Running costs are similar if you use OEM cartridges.

Canon IP5200 is the best and fastest std format printer. The IP4200
will provide the same quality but the photo speed is much slower.

Be sure to use Canon OEM inks.

Canon Photo Paper Pro, Epson Premium Photo Glossy, and Costco/Kirkland
(Ilford) full sheet paper work great with Costco being about 1/7 of the
price.
