According to what you posted (above) msconfig is starting when you boot.
msconfig.exe = msconfig = System Configuration Utility

## No. Sorry. That's not happening. I said I can't *use*
Start/Run/msconfig or regedit. Also Taksmanager doesn't work. They flash
briefly across the monitor and that's it. System-Restore NEVER worked on
this PC from day one, even after HP reinstalled the OS a few months ago. To
use them I had to COPY them to an emergency folder on my desktop, rename
them and run them from there. No viruses, worms, or Trojans were found on
my PC. Just some crapware (Bingogamer) and a keylogger which I removed - it
made no difference.
Hit: Ctrl + Alt + Delete | on the Applications tab, see if
System Configuration Utility is listed | on the Processes
tab, see if msconfig.exe is listed

## No. It's not listed. I thought it wasn't supposed to be listed there
unless it was running?
When you boot do you see a message that says:
[[You have used the System Configuration Utility to change the way Windows
starts.

## Only for a split second - not like before when it sat there until it was
clicked on. When I try to use Start/run/regedit or msconfig it flashes for
a brief second as well.
The System Configuration Utility is currently in Diagnostic or Selective
Startup mode, causing this message to be displayed and the utility to run
every time Windows starts.]]

## It flashes for a split second, just like msconfig, regedit and
TaskManager. All three to had to be copied to as separate folder as I said
above to be used. SOMETHING is stopping or interrupting their running
correctly like before.
If you're set for Diagnostic Startup....
[[NOTE: This method temporarily disables Microsoft services (for example,
Networking, Plug and Play, Event Logging, and Error Reporting) and
permanently deletes all restore points for the System Restore utility. Do
not do this if you want to retain your restore points for System Restore or
need to use a Microsoft service to test a problem.]]

## Do not do what,...what is "diagnostic startup?" Sorry, you lost me
here. I didn't do anything but try Start/Run/Msconfig the other day and
realized it no longer worked. Then I tried regedit and same thing - a flash
across the monitor - then alt/ctrl/delete the SAME flash... How do I get
them to work like they worked before? How do I reverse this "Diagnostic
Startup?"

If you meant what was clicked on the General Tab - Selective Startup was
checked as it always is. The window that used to come up only flashes
briefly now - so fast you can barely see it.

## I have never successfully figured out how to use a Forum. I read
something like this at that Forum the other day and already posted it there,
although there was no send or post button, so I hit the enter key. I assume
it was posted. I don't know what happened to my HiJack post since other
Boards have post/send buttons. I never was able to find it later last night
nor a reply to it. A "search" there turned up nothing.

## I don't know what to SEARCH for. If I type in "msconfig" or "regedit not
working" or "regedit," or my Username there .... this is what I keep
getting:

"Sorry, we could not find any help topics that matched your search criteria,
please try again."

So I try again and get the SAME exact message.

## I was supposed to be alredy registered at this website from yesterday.
However, this is what I get there today:

"The registration code did not match the one displayed, a new code has been
generated, please try again."

It will not take yesterdays code number so gives me a NEW number, then
rejects the NEW number it just issued to me. When I try again all I get is
this same window and go in a circle getting new code numbers it will not
accept - so issues yet another unacceptable code number. Ok, six tries was
enough - I gave up.

The other window asked for my account Username but then wouldn't accept
that either. Now you see why I never use Forums. I'm not sure if the
C&Paste from yesterday is actually there since the SEARCH keeps saying:

"Sorry, we could not find any help topics that matched your search criteria,
please try again."

Is there a place easier to use than this where I can send the info from
HiJackThis? One that remembers your Usernam, Password and any Code Numbers?
Maybe a posting Board???

I *could not log on* to this forum today. It kept rejecting the Code
numbers it gave me, and after 6 ties/code numbers I gave up. You cannot
POST there without being logged on. You cannot log on when it keeps
rejecting the Code numbers it gives you. I was SEARCHING for the post I
thought I posted there yesterday and any possible replies.

THE PROBLEM was Oberon CRAPWARE had somehow gotten onto my PC and someone
spotted it in the "HijackThis" log I posted on a Usenet Freeware NG. He
spotted something called "system2.exe" ( it was in Windows/system32.) When
I dragged it to the desktop, renamed it and rebooted, Start/run/msconfig &
regedit worked as did TaskManager. :-) The Freeware NG has a large number
of computer savvy posters and most are very helpful - if they can be. There
are also NGs devoted to this scumware and other trash that invades computers
that I believe I will check out.

Thank you for trying to help with this issue........

The correct command is msconfig not MISCONFIG.

Ok guys, more problems with XP-home. Now I can't use Start/Run/Misconfi
anymore. It opens for a few split seconds and closes. It's more of a FLAS
on the screen so cannot be used at all. How is this problem fixed? Findin
the misconfig exe just does the same thing. It simply flashes across th
monitor and closes. How is it made to remain open long enough to actuall
use? Anyone ... ??

Also how do I get rid of this unwanted MS messenger thing? It just keep
coming back
