StarDownloader or DLexpert or ?

I switched from Flashget to Star Downloader early last year and then
to Net Transport in the fall.

I think Flashget is the most reliable and useful of any download
manager I've used, but I couldn't take the blinking (literal and
euphemistic) ads in the adware version. I also took a noticable
performance hit on dialup for downloading new ads all the time. If
the ads were static and and bandwidth not a problem, I would switch
back. Flashget was very stable and quite feature rich.

Flashget is not as fast as some other downloaders (per PC Mag tests),
but the testing methodology was not explained. I suspect that
Flashget was slower in part because the download does not start until
you verify information. Start Downloader and Net Transport also
suffer from the same minor flaw.

I found Net Transport more reliable than Star Downloader: more likely
to pickup starts; much better at redirects; and much more likely to
complete successfully. Star Downloader suffers from a moderately
severe error -- the download was often corrupt (usually short) and I
was _not_ warned.

Star Downloader does not support password protected sites. I haven't
checked Net Transport because I don't need that feature at the moment.
All three provide for bandwidth throttling, but again Flashget does
this best.

After informal experimenting, I settled on 2 threads per job and 3
threads maximum for dialup connections. This seemed the best
compromise given the variable performance of servers and threads.

If anyone ever finds a download manager that works with MajorGeeks,
please let me know.

Another way , is to use the download manager ( with resume ) in Opera .
I use this version .

GREAT PRODUCT!!
Hi (Please forward this email onto everyone in your company). I just
want to congratulate you all on an amazing application. I'm a senior
web developer and have also spent many years developing in C++. I know
the importance of good software and good standards. It is clear to
everyone that you value your customers. A major fall down with
shareware is that users are restricted or bugged to buy before they
get to test it thoroughly. I would never part with my money until I've
tested well. Because you don't bug the users with these reminders and
have a 60-day trial it REALLY DOES make you stand out from the crowd.
I have been using Internet Download Manager for just over 2 weeks & am
EXTREMELY IMPRESSED with it and am going to purchase the full program,
especially as a way of saying thanks. Please keep up the good work!
You may feel at times that you're getting nowhere or people are just
using it without paying. I kow the feeling as a developer but I have
learnt that your approach is without doubt the best. Not only do your
customers value you, but everywhere you look, customers are praising
you. That SPEAKS VOLUMES!!! Thanks guys & no matter how tempted you
get never make the interface more complicated, as the simplicity but
DETAILED information & impressive download speeds is what makes it so
powerful!! I wish I had ?1,000,000 to award you properly!! All the
best!

Please recommend a easy & reliable & spyware free d/l manager.
Just had a poor experience after someone recommended FlashGet
thanks

I need something which
- keeps track where I've got the file,
- assigns a category to it (multiple categories are better),
- lets me enter some notes
- and I don't need mult-threaded downloads.

Any ideas?

<Snip my previous response>

Fros, You never did explain your bad experience. Except as previously
noted, I thought Flashget was excellant. I'd go back to it if it
didn't have blinking ads and ads that rotate (and must be downloaded)
daily.

BTW, over the years I have tried several other freeware and trialware
download managers, although by no means most, before migrating from
Flashget to Star Downloader and then to Net Transport last year.

Correction - I checked the manual after posting last week. Per the
doc, Net Transport supports password protected sites.

If you like to add long comments, Net Transport does have a
disadvantage: the comment field is narrow, especially in the
properties window, and is not resizable (Win2k). I use ResizeEnable
to overcome this. See

All three dl managers meet your listed criteria. If you really(?)
want to single thread, set default to simultaneous jobs = 1 (or max
threads = 1 depending upon the package); and threads per job = 1.

Putting "www.internetdownloadmanager.com" into groups.google.com, one sees
that ACF is not alone in being spammed. Hundreds of hits, across all groups.
It obviously is in the nature of that company's business, to have the groups
get spammed for its stealth advertising.

This latest spew spree in ACF, it is all the same spammer, who is changing
its From: header each time. I'm debating whether I should take time to write
a complaint to the spammer's ISP and to Google. Or, if I'm lucky, has anyone
else here accomplished that work yet?

The more people complain, the better the chances that there will be
action against the spammer. On the other hand, when only few people
complain, it might be considered a mistake and not processed.
So, go and complain!

The only bad part of StarDownloader is that it slowes other things
down, but it contains no spyware or what so ever and I like that very
much.

Hmm, but Star Downloader has gone from "free" to "nagware" now, since
"Pro" version has come out. Every time I run Star Downloader now I
get a nag message advertising the pro version, with no way to stop it.

SPAM - note affiliate ID.

Two posts have mentioned Internet Download Manager. This may be a
good product, but it is TRIALWARE (unless I missed an exemption
somewhere.)

From the IDM site:

Note that you should stop using (uninstall) the trial version after 60
day trial period! If you want to continue using IDM, you must register
to get full-featured IDM version.
....
After the registration you'll get additional features (not available
in the trial version):

No usage limitations
Management of site passwords
Delete all completed button enabled
Better utilization of bandwidth
Built-in download logic optimizer

I used to use stardownloader but have found FreshDevices FreshDownload
much better, you can register at the web site for a serial but it works
without that.

Ah, thanks for that! :) I didn't even see that option before. I take
back what I said about it becoming "nagware". :)
