Please recommend a easy & reliable & spyware free d/l manager.
Just had a poor experience after someone recommended FlashGet

I like stardownloader better, but use DLExpert because it can write a
text file next to the downloaded program.

Flashget works great, I've found, better than any other one I've tried. What
exactly happened?
Netpumper works fine, though it's more than a bit basic. FreshDownload is
also a perfectly useable program.

Star is my main downloader, but I use DLExpert for sites that require
authentication.

Flashget is still the best downloader in my opinion , but its not
freeware but shareware (or you can buy it).The early versions contained
adware and was best avoided howver later versions had that taken out..
maybe you installed such an early version?

Leechget is crippleware since a few weeks : only 3 simultaneous
downloads are allowed with the free edition.

IMO and for my use, 3 is more than enough. LeechGet handles redirects
better than any other I've tried.

Even is 3 is more than enough (for you, or for me), this makes the
product crippleware or liteware.

I think of crippleware as a subjective term.
The destinction between liteware and crippleware being: the subjective
missing of essential features.
If 3 simultaneous downloads is more than enough for me, it is liteware
to me, otherwise it is crippleware to me.

For any user on a dialup connection, 3 download limit is an obvious
cripple. It makes the program totally useless. I liked it, but ditched it
for good when it became crippleware, as I couldn't use any of its
advanced features.

Eh? For dialup you don't want any more than 3 simultaneous downloads, really
you don't want more than one simultaneous download, or all your bandwidth
is going to be swallowed up by connection overhead.

really you don't want more than one simultaneous download, or all your
bandwidth is going to be swallowed up by connection overhead.

For dialup, I have to add many downloads a time and then continue at
another day. Leechget fails to meet this criteria thanks to it being
crippleware.

You are not talking about the number of simultaneous downloads, you
are talking about the ability to set up a download list for later
download.

You could also consider storing the download links in a suitable
(html) editor and download them later using LeechGet.
A special folder in your favorites list can work as a storing place
for download links. Just drag-n-drop the links into that folder.

I use a special folder in my newsreader to store messages with
download links I may want to use later.

I second LeechGet, but I have also one installed that is by "SUN", the
Sun Download Manager, which I like also like, especially for large
downloads. (java-based, must have java installed)

As a user of Star, can you tell me why it doesn't always open up
when I attempt to download?
Even though I set it to be integreated into Explorer -- sometime the
Microsoft downloader takes over.
I have seleted and reinstalled different versions of Star and yest
this always happens randomly?
Anyone have any clues to whay this happens, or is Star just buggy?

I switched from Flashget to Star Downloader early last year and then
to Net Transport in the fall.

I think Flashget is the most reliable and useful of any download
manager I've used, but I couldn't take the blinking (literal and
euphemistic) ads in the adware version. I also took a noticable
performance hit on dialup for downloading new ads all the time. If
the ads were static and and bandwidth not a problem, I would switch
back. Flashget was very stable and quite feature rich.

Flashget is not as fast as some other downloaders (per PC Mag tests),
but the testing methodology was not explained. I suspect that
Flashget was slower in part because the download does not start until
you verify information. Start Downloader and Net Transport also
suffer from the same minor flaw.

I found Net Transport more reliable than Star Downloader: more likely
to pickup starts; much better at redirects; and much more likely to
complete successfully. Star Downloader suffers from a moderately
severe error -- the download was often corrupt (usually short) and I
was _not_ warned.

Star Downloader does not support password protected sites. I haven't
checked Net Transport because I don't need that feature at the moment.
All three provide for bandwidth throttling, but again Flashget does
this best.

After informal experimenting, I settled on 2 threads per job and 3
threads maximum for dialup connections. This seemed the best
compromise given the variable performance of servers and threads.

If anyone ever finds a download manager that works with MajorGeeks,
please let me know.

I've got FlashGet 1.40. I have adds in my version. Which version
does not have adds?
