I would be grateful if the group could recommend any freeware spreadsheets
please? I want something for fairly routine number crunching.

Thanks Neil

StarBase v5.2 (if you can find it)

OpenOffice.org does a good job, but maybe the download is to huge for
you (about 80MB): openoffice.org
You might find an old version of kyplot, which is very good in
scientific analysis.

Starbase is a database program, not a spreadsheet. I think you meant
the "Starcalc v5.2" module from Staroffice? I looked for a link, but
couldn't find one. Maybe somebody else will have better luck. Also,
not sure the module can be downloaded separately.

StarOffice 5.2 used the all in one philosophy. No separate modules, no
separate downloads.
If you only need a spreadsheet you are better off with OO.org as it has
newer and better import and export filters.
Of course, OO.org still comes with wordprocessor and more, but you can trash
the wordprocessor you are using right now.

Excellent! :) Thanks. I've been looking for a free spreadsheet to offer
at netwonder. I've installed it and so far looks good. The home page nor
the download has any info on liscense though. Nada! Not even in the Help
facility. The Home page, for the moment anyway, isn't coming up,
i.e.http://www.sphygmic.com/index.htm so no info there.

Free spreadsheets are evidently difficult to come by. I'd like to verify
that distribution is ok so that I may host the zip :)

I second the endorsements of OpenOffice. It's a full-featured Office
Suite, including an up-to-date spreadsheet app. Sphygmic is very
limited in my experience, and won't offer the compatibility with newer
Excel files that OOo does. I like OOo so much I even download it on my
dial-up connexion. Go for it!

Ditto. It came with my Linux distro (as did StarOffice), but I downloaded
a slighty newer version, when it became available.

Hello, Joachim!
Thanks for the clarification. Guess a good free-standing
spreadsheet may need to be added to this group's wish list, assuming
it's still being maintained.

There used to be one called Sphygmic spreadsheet which was freeware.
Not sure if it's still to be found.
Give it a Google try.

I'm not sure if you are looking for a Linux program but if not then
a quick search found this for Windows....

Sphygmic Software Spreadsheet

Since you replied to my post, rather than to the OP, perhaps you could
have taken the time to read my expressed reservations about the very
spreadsheet you are recommending. Sphygmic is a toy spreadsheet, only
compatible with very old versions of Excel, and thus likely to be of
very limited use.

And isn't that the one that you can't print from? If it's the one with
the Snoopy-looking icon, that's the one.

Max and Melinda,
The OP was only looking for "fairly routine number crunching". He
never said anything about it needing to be compatible with Excel.
Never heard about this print problem with Sphygmic. The screenshot
does show a print button in the toolbar. Melinda, can you clarify this
point?
My only reservation about this program is it's age. It used to be
Pricelessware.

Interestingly, he actually replied to *my* post -- cutting whatever it
was I said, and it's attribution, but leaving my MID as the last one in
the References header, so it came through here as a direct response to
me, even though it had nothing from me in it, except for the MID.

I guess he's kinda all-around confused. :)

Yes, I knew it had been on pricelessware, and I wondered how it made
that list after downloading it and trying it out. I think that a
freeware, stand-alone spreadsheet could really fill a niche if one were
available that could perform reasonably.

As to Excel-compatibility, I guess I was jumping ahead. It just seemed
to me that if he ever needed to migrate or share his files, OOo's
Calc would be a better choice, in addition to providing more
functionality from the get-go.
