Believe it or not hearing loss is not curable, yes, that is true! There is no cure! You do not get a second chance once you find that out, it is usually too late.

Rest your ears, they also need a break from time to time. You owe it to yourself to read the article fully.
What's that? Headphones linked to hearing loss?

I have created a poll where everyone is reqested to honestly participate and indicte in the poll how much time you spend actually listening through the headphones everyday.

If you need to share your thoughts on the subject, it is more than welcome

That's quite worrying! I don't use head/ear phones at all, but my 17 year-old brother seems to always have the things firmly plugged into his ears - the volume so loud that we can hear the words to the songs. But how do you convince a 17 year-old not to do this??

Show him my hearing aids ... ;)

All they do for me is amplify the noise ... so I lip read instead, I don't do too bad if you haven't got an accent ... dam hard to convince anybody, until too late.

My Dr once said, "stay away from loud noises" yeah right?

I still listen to music, and through headphones occasionally, but I do have to have it loud.

Looks from the results of the poll so far that PC Review is bucking the trend as far as ear phones go!! Lets HEAR it for the boring old git of PC Review! :-) Now run a poll on who plays first person shoot em up games with the house shaking from the speakers being so loud!!

:-/

I use my headphones about 1-2 hours a day when playing Americas Army (online game). Its the only way to be good at it ;).

I use my Headphones at night, (so i do not disturb the rest of the house) and, as an audio nut, I bought a nice pair of Sony MDRV-700's (excellent sound) :)

oh.. america's army.. :) I used to play that, but got fed up with noobies and idiots giving me hassle when I was playing as the sniper... getting accused of "camping" oh.. sorry... i thought thats what snipers did!

idiots...

i might nip back in, my honor of 36 could do wth an increase :)

Even though like Jaguar, I am a certified audio nut, but, I do not own any portable audio so I do not have them on on a daily basis. I own the Sennheiser 580's which I use occasionally, especially if reviewing music or evaluating equipment.

I shall have to get my brother to read that article... I don't suppose it will do much, but if he does go deaf at least I will be able to say "I told you so!" :D

Looks like i'm the only one who so far has picked the 2-4 hours option! I usually have them in at work.
Maybe i'll give it a rest for a bit.... :(

never wear them, i dont need them, i usually listen to music on my stereo or PC

I will tell you a true story.

A little boy who was six years old when he realised something was wrong, as he had started school and could not understand the teacher when the teacher was speaking, so after a while he told his parents of the problem, his mother went to the school to explain to the head master what was happening, the head master had the school nurse to explore the problem and she referred the boy to a doctor, who in turn referred him to an E.N.T. specialist, confirmation was then past to the mother that the boy was deaf in one ear and partially deaf in the other.

After seventeen operations [Mastoid-ectomy] over a period of fifty-four years that person is still deaf in one ear and has 20% hearing in the other, now if it were not through the surgeons involved that little boy would not be here today [cochlear meningitis] was the cause and the nurse involved first saw the problem, the first operation was performed within 24 hours of seeing that nurse and I will always be grateful to all those involved!

Yes that boy was I!

So look after your hearing there is no second chance and that’s a fact.

Itsme,

I cannot express myself how moved I was after reading your post. This is the first time on PC Review I was overwhelmed after reading a post. I wish everyone on this forum reads your message and learns something from it.

God bless you for sharing that with all of us.:thumb:

Information

One of the factors to consider is that it's not just the time that you use them for, but also the sound level you are pumping thru' the earpieces.

There is a lot of good information on http://www.dontlosethemusic.com/home/ which is being promted by the RNID (Royal National Institute for the Deaf), including some good comparisons, and legal info about noise in the work place. There are some new regulations coming in shortly which means more protection for the worker.

Has anyone noticed that some people make a big fuss about having all the correct hearing protection for work, and the spend their Friday and Saturday nights with their head buried in a speaker so large it needs it's own post-code? (Or is that just me?)

30 years of running a very loud Disco, mostly playing Rock/Metal, seeing countless bands who played WAY too loud and my hearing's actually very good.

Guess I'm lucky :)

High frequency's dropped off a little though, but that's a natural thing, happens to everybody.

Get yourself an audio generator, start off at 20Khz, then drop down in steps until you can actually hear something. A five year old will pick up at around 18Khz, I think I managed 15Khz. Can't remember now, haven't done that test for several years.

I use headphones occasionally, mostly when I'm playing games/listening to music/watching movies on computer when somebody else in room wants to watch TV.

No, its not just you... I did some work as an audio & lighting tech for a local company for many years, and have seen things that would make Dr's at ENT clinic's cry

one was at an indoor "rave" club that had installed a nice new sound system. this place was the ground floor of an old warehouse, and had been split into 3 rooms (dance, club & chill out) each room having a bigger soundsystem (15k up to 30k - this was before the days of health and safety inspections) the dance room had the biggest system that featured an array of 4 X huge cabs with 2 X 18" bass sub's in each, across the bottom of the stage, and you just could not stand in front of them. we had safety rails in front of them but one idiot jumped them, and fell over.. we had to stop the music so as the bouncers could get him out :D

We all have hearing protection now, but most of us have developed mild tinitus already and one of our lads has already had to retire.. So yes... look after your hearing!
