I remember the crap that Luu Tran used to put up with over XNews --
because (a) he didn't include such-and-such a feature (that he didn't
want in a reader he designed for himself), and because (b) he wouldn't
give away the code -- was amazingly vituperative from people who seemed
to feel he owed them something for nothing.
