short filename formats

Yes that fixed it! And I take back everything I said about the Internet
and about Newsgroups being no good, an so on..

According to the http://www.rexswain.com/friendly.html site, that's
EXACTLY what happens...

(When a conflict arises, Win95 reverts to using the tildes and digits --
subsequently created files named
"ThisNameIsLonger.txt" and "ThisNameIsEvenLonger.txt" appear as
"THISNA~1.TXT" and
"THISNA~2.TXT". But at least we got one decent short filename!)

You did a lousy job of explaining what you were seeing originally.

A Jap would at least have the decency to disembowel itself |-)
 
I never did it. As I said it happened upon changing to a larger
harddrive. Either windows is programmed to insert that under certain
conditions or a program inserted it or even a virus.
