I have just bought this ROUTER
and i am having trouble getting onto the internet. If i use a usb network adapter which has an ethernet cable connected to it going into the ntl set top box will i be able to use this with the router as the pc doesnt have a network card? the other pc does.

I have two RJ45 Cat5e patch cables, are these the ones i need?

Also is there a quick way to set up the network? and how?

Thanks

Stuart

I use NTL.
Broadband and have found that it dose not take kindly to USB Connections let me know exactly what your set up is.

Well what i have tried it just to connect the one pc to the router to see if it works, so i know it works, it says it is connected but when i load the internet it doesnt load any sites.

I dunno if you have broadband through your set top box but they gave me the usb network adapter thing as my old pc didnt have a network card. What i have tried is leave the network thing in the usb port but take out the cable that goes to the box and connect it to the WAN port on the router, i then connected a RJ45 cable to the usb adapter and connected it to one of the ports on the router.

I have explained it HERE with some screenshots.

Thanks

Disregarding the router for one moment, can you get online just using the USB Modem? Are you sure your ISP has made your Broadband service active?

I think it unlikely the computers will see each via a network/router using the USB Modem as a link.

Best solution is to fit a PCI Network card, less than a tenner from PC World.

And your link wouldn't load, btw.

Yeah i can connect to the internet with thr usb network adapter as i have had it for over a year, i dont really want to buy a network card as the pc still has almost a year left of its warranty.

When i have connected it to the router why does it say the network connection is connected if i cant use a usb network adapter to connect to the router? Any ideas.

I think the link doesnt work becauset he site is either busy or down at the moment, so should work soon.

Also, i think i had tried to use a RJ45 cable that i bought from the ntl set top box to the other pc's network card but i dont think it connected, why is this?

Edit: The link should work now, just wait a while for it to load, thanks.

Connect your PCs buy means of crossover cables to the router DON’T use USB,
Set up is comparatively easy, check your network connections, is your ISP set up correctly? If you phone NTL they will talk you through the process, if they supplied you with a disc it will not function properly so don’t use it? And like Floppsy has said
re: PCI Network card it is a must.

No Crossover are Ethernet cables. One end lets say is RED=BLUE= GREEN Etc: the other is reversed.

im a little confused here, will the cable i posted work when i connect it to the router from the pc?

OK, I almost fell asleep waiting for that link to open, so I give up ;)

So, basically, the setup is this:

4 port router with WAN socket

USB Modem/adapter connected with Ethernet cable to Router WAN socket. Connected to machine with no network socket via USB port. Telephone line connected to modem.

2nd computer connected via ethernet link to one socket of router.

Network being recognised on computer with USB Modem/adapter connected to it

It won't connect to Internet

Is that correct?

I'm assuming you've run Network setup on both machines and they can see each other

But even if you haven't, you should still be able to get online.

I have a Linskys 4 port router, 4 ports and a modem socket. 4 computers connected, ethernet modem in modem port. No crossover cables used.

It's possible, as itsme said, you may need a crossover cable to connect modem to WAN port, I'm not really sure.

You could try plugging the modem into an empty port, rather than the WAN socket, and give that a go.

If that doesn't work, buy a crossover cable and try it.

And what company sells computers with a warranty but doesn't supply a network connection? Bit out of order, that, but I digress ;)

yeah i was lead to believe it came with a network card as it said something like Wired LAN 10/100 something when i bought it which was a couple months back and now the website has put it down as 56k.

i havent tried connecting both computers to the router, only the one to see if it works but i can get onto the internet, it says the network connections is connected but when i load up the internet, nothing loads.

You have confused me now; I can’t see your links.
Anyway my set up is as follows, cable modem>supply cable in>feed Ethernet cable out> to router> out of router crossover cable to PC 1 > crossover cable to PC 2> crossover cable to PC 3
I also have a wireless connection to another PC

It sounds like you have an onboard 10/100 LAN connection?

The main computer is seeing the router via the modem then, if it's detecting a network.

Have you tried plugging modem into a port, rather than WAN socket, as I suggested you try?

It wouldn't hurt to plug 2nd computer in as well and run network setup on both machines.

Then see if they recognise each other and if you can transfer data between the two.

That was my first thought, but notice the site where machine purchased made a mistake and later changed spec to 56K connection ;)

So, no LAN connection :(
