Self-build project

you did get the right type? can you test it in your old PC if its compatible ?

Unfortunatly I haven't got another computer to check anything with. It's PCI-E and so is the mobo. There shouldn't be any problems. I'm going to get hold of overclockers andsee what they say.

I've just read the specs on your card at e-buyer and it seems that model doesn't need extra power, it takes all the juice it needs from the pci-e slot. It also says it comes with two DVI to VGA adaptors.

Could you tell us:

1) What connectors you have on the back of your monitor.
2) What connectors you have on the back of your video card.
3) What connector cables you have to go between the two.
4) Details of any video adaptors you have.

Don't connect those 4 and 6 pin PSU cables to anywhere, it seems they're not needed.

And I noticed you decided to start the machine with everything connected, despite my recommending you left the optical drives and hard disks disconnected initially.

Oh well.

i did actually unconnect HDD and DVD, then started it up first time. Beeeep Beep Beep. Then thought I'd connect them see if it made a difference, it didn't.

i will root around for the DVI-VGA connectors, i don't believe they came in the box. will get back to your with the monitor connections..

pretty sure it's the graphics card that's dodgy, am checking it in my mates machine on saturday, and his graphics card in my machine, hopefully that works so i know my mobo etc is okay...

Overclockers are going to charge me £10 plus P+P to check whether the card is faulty, if it is, replace it. could use my room insurance and replace it for £25, think the latter option is the easiest, and quickest, and probably about the same price.

Hey,

this'll sound real stupid but,... i took the computer around my mate's, he managed to push the graphics card in a little further and the computer now works. I went through BIOS pretty quickly, and the installed XP, I'm on the internet with it now!!! A Woo Hoo..!!!

I don't know how he got the graphics card in the right position, from what I tried, it would not go in any further. it's still not plush with the case, but obviously good enough. It might have something to do with the plastic latch on the mobo's slot, actually took it off in the process and it slid in fine...

So I'm now damn happy to have a fully working (I think) self built system.

Thanks for all the advise guys, think i went a bit overboard thinking the graphics card was bust. The neovo manual labelled the VGA cable as DVI, that's why I got that confused... was kinda sh*tting myself thinking I'd broken a £900 machine...

So, just thought I'd wrap this thread up. will be posting Mark05 etc scores and getting advice about running the system etc.

feels a lot better than a pre-built system :)

p.s and I didn't use any sellotape in the end :)
