Easy question, I hope....

I need to format my system, but I don't want to lose all
of my e-mails. I can handle exporting the address book,
but I don't know how to save the individual e-mails and
then restore them after to format is complete.

Anyone know how to do this?

Don't bother to export anything - just locate and copy your pst file. That
contains ALL your outlook data except the account settings but you can
export those as a separate file, depending on what version of Outlook you
are using.

What version of Outlook are you using now and what
version of Outlook will you be moving them to? The
easiest thing is to create a PST file or a Personal
Folder and the detach the file, copy it, and then
reattach it when you done. But the steps are different
depending on the version of Outlook.

I'm using and staying on 2000. I'm going to move the
system from ME to XP and I'm just taking this opportunity
to clean up the drive. What is a pst file?

It's the file that contains all your Outlook data - commonly named
outlook.pst
