SATA Errors

It appears in the bios?
The connections havent come loose?
Your sata hd site will have a test utility

When i restart it's there again.
Nope, not loose. I was haing disk errors before, so I think it's related.
I downloaded the utility, and it spent 40 minutes running a 5 minute test,
without completing (I had to abort).

I first heard noise from the hard-disk. Then there was "Delayed write error"
on the primary master disk. Then I noticed the Power Cable is loose. I
unplugged it, cleaned and tighten, then plugged it in on hot, rescanned for
devices in Device Manager and the disk was ready to go again. System
remained completely stable :-)

If the test utility failed to complete then you certainly have a hw problem.
Whether its the hd or mobo.......?

I tried it again though and it completed, showing no problems.

I ended up reformatting again, and I've realized that the only successful
format (I was able to copy some files, but got the error after a few minutes)
has been with the Windows Installation Disk. Using the Disk is also the only
time the System Volume Information and Recycler appeared.

Could this have anything to do with the Allocation Unit Size? I think my
default is 4096bytes.

Are you saying you could not Partition/format via Disk Management?
If this is your only sata drive you might want to check your mobo manual for
specific instructions for installing a sata drive, as they can vary.
I'm assuming the sata drive is compatible with the version of sata your mobo
supports, ie they are both sata1 or sata2

When formatting through Disk Management, the format completes, but when I
view the drive there's no System Volume Information or Recycler, and when I
try to add a new folder, I get an error saying
"Unable to create folder New Folder
The System cannot find the file specified"
and when I try to add a new file, either nothing happens or I get an error.

It's SATA II and my MB is only SATA 1, so I configured the jumper for SATA 1
mode. This has made no difference however.

Does your mobo manual state that a sata/raid driver must be installed from
floppy via F6 during an installation/repair.
Does it require any specific raid bios setting when using a single drive, eg
as 'jbod'
What is the motherboard?

You should be fine with Allocation Unit size of 4 KB. This is the default
for NTFS.
Here is what kind of problems you can expect with large Allocation unit
sizes (16 KB to 64 KB).
If you install windows on such partition, then you will most likely receive
this error:

| A disk read error occurred
| Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart
I was told on the microsoft.public.windows.server.general news-group that I
can use the XP install CD (the one without any service packs integrated),
boot to recovery console and run FIXBOOT to replace the boot brogram with
the old one that supports starting from partitions with large cluster size
like 64 KB. So currently I have XP boot records on all NTFS partitions. And
all partitions are with cluster size of 64 KB. The 2k3-RC1 install CD also
does the job.

However, because XP without SP will always use LBA32 and never LBA48 - and
this is especially true for the Recovery Console, from where I have to run
FIXBOOT, things are getting complicated.

Here is the workaround: XP can support hard disks larger than 128 GB, but
only if it decides, that the disk is SCSI. I have a PCI IDE RAID controller
card. When I attach the two 320 GB IDE disks to it, XP will recognise them
correctly and I can use FIXBOOT. I still need to integrate the RAID
controller`s drivers for TextMode setup into XP (using nLite) and burn the
modified install CD, so that XP can recognise the controller it sef. The
integrate method is alternative to "Press F6 at boot time to specify custom
storage drivers". It is very useful if you don`t have a floppy.

A friend of mine had a lot of head ache with this problem and lost a lot of
data:
Driver required to access 200 GB SATA disk`s sectors beyond 128 GB border.
Guess what happend when something got wrong with the driver ;-) About 63 GB
of sectors were instantly marked as BAD.

If you mean a third party driver was used to enable biglba then I'm not
surprised.
But if you mean a set of hd's in a working array was installed on a new raid
controller then it depends on the controller whether it can be done without
a clean installation and rebuild

Yes, indeed! I think it was for the SATA controller built-in the main board.

No, it was a new computer bought in December 2004. Three days later, Windows
XP died when I changed this configuration parameter:
System Properties, Advanced tab, Performance, Settings button, Advanced tab:
Memory usage = System cance

On the next logon after restart, Windows XP displayed many "Delayed write
failed" errors and then died. The two partitions that were on the SATA
hard-disk were destroyed.

Strange why this parameter caused Windows to destroy the partitions?

Biglba was enabled by default in Winxp sp1, prior to that there was a
registry setting, as per MS kb article
Sata/Raid drivers are not the same. Many mobos have two sata controlers,
installing the incorrect driver, if this is possible, would corrupt the
array.

If the page file was set to zero, this would cause problems

It says so, but if I need to install drivers, how am I able to access it at
all? Plus, you only need to the drivers if you're installing Windows on it. I
already have Windows installed on another drive.
I don't have a working floppy drive. Could a flash drive be used for the
drivers?

The BIOS settings are correct (it's set to IDE and not RAID).

It's a Gigabyte GA-K8VM800M.

Use nLite to integrate drivers in Windows Setup.
~ download nLite from http://www.nliteos.com/download.html
If you believe that you need any drivers, you can integrate them in the
install CD with nLite. That way you will not need to use floppy disk and F6
when Text-Mode setup starts.

Finally create ISO image and burn it to CD. Use that CD to install Windows.

If the mobo manual states you have to install drivers via F6 then that is
what you have to do. This may be so even if win is allready installed as win
doesnt support all sata controler/ mobo options. In the case where win is
allready installed you F6 during the repair installation.
Drivers can only be installed from floppy, unless you slipstream into a win
installation cd

While trying to get it to work, my main Windows installation stopped working
so I did a repair install. Now formatting doesn't work at all. What to do?

All becoming confusing;
If you are saying your sys is no longer functioning, disconnect the new
drive, and repair your win installation.
Ensure win is operating correctly before doing anything else.
What is the mobo on your sys?
