Revert to XP without windows.old

Here is exact wording on disk:
"emachines Windows XP Media Center Version 2005 with Update Rollup 2
Operating System Disc
Use this disc to re-install your operating system
To reinstall the operating system: insert this disc, close all programs,
restart your computer, then follow the on-screen instructions
Warning: this process erases all files from the hard drive
For distribution only with a new eMachines PC"

Actually, I got that url from a Gateway Chat support agent. Of course, at the
time I had not yet tried the process on the disc. Let me try it one more time
and see what happens. You'll know it didn't work if you see another post from
me. Thanks so much, Gordon. Mike

Yes, Gateway owns eMachines. As I told Gordon a few minutes ago, I have a
eMachines OPerating System Disc that came with the pc when I bought it at
Office Depot. I quoted everything on the face of the disc to Gordon. I am
going to try the process one more time. If you see a post within the next few
minutes you'll know it didn't work. Thanks so much, Mike

Malke, it occurs to me you're not using the same reader that I am for these
threads. Here is what it says on the disc:
emachines Windows XP Media Center Version 2005 with Update Rollup 2
OPerating System Disc
Use this disc to re-install your operating system
To reinstall:
Insert this disc, close all programs, restart your computer, then follow the
onscreen instructions.
Warning: this process erases all data and files from the hard drive.

Of course we're not using the same newsreader, but that doesn't matter.
You're not even using a newsreader (you're using the dreadful web
interface) and I'm using KNode in Linux. What does matter is that you have
to be patient. I see Gordon's posts but it takes a few minutes at the very
least for all posts to show up. He's in the UK I believe and I'm in
California (USA). Also, I don't spend my time doing nothing except waiting
for your next post. ;-)

It sounds like you've got a physical restore disk, not an actual operating
system disk. So forget the whole F11 thing and just set your computer to
boot from your optical drive, have the restore disk in the drive, and
follow the instructions to apply the factory image.

You set the boot order in the BIOS or in many cases there will be a "press
[some key] prompt to give you a temporary boot order menu.

After your factory image is applied, don't forget to remove all extraneous
OEM preinstalled garbage, do all Windows Updates, etc.

Malke, I have never thought you're sitting there waiting for my posts. I
appreciate that you're there at all, much less to answer questions from a
dumb user like me. Thanks to you and Gordon, XP is back on my pc and I am
happy. Am now configuring everything and reinstalling programs and am about
to get data/files back in place. Will then follow your instructions on
imaging, etc. Thanks again. I'm out of here on this issue. Bye. Have a great
day. Mike
