Dear Kevin,

On a different subject:

I have clients who use thier fax lines for SBC DSL.
From your comments, I am wondering if I can
use a home phone line (voice) as a DSL line at the same time,
or, once having turned it into a DSL line will it still work
as a voice phone line as well?

Let me put it this way, before SBC offered DSL, I had DSL from another ISP
here that had there DSL on a dedicated line (which BTW wasn't fast enough
for my son to play StarCraft and anyone else to download anything). In
addition to that I had a my main voice line, a fax line, and my childrens
line so, I was paying for four wires coming into my home. I have combined
all four lines into one and cut my cost by more than 50% by using
personalized rings for the kids and fax line.

So to answer your question yes, SBC's DSL lines can support DSL and voice,
the kit they send out has plenty of filters to get the DSL squeal out of the
line and DSL gets an unfiltered line.

Right, but Network solutions is where I am registered
through. SBC delegated control to the admin of
NS67.Worldnic.com, which is a network solutions server.
When I call network solutions they tell me I need create
the reverse zone on my side. Which I do and it doesn't
work. Any other ideas?

Do you have a host name registered with NetSol for your DNS server?
If you don't you can do that in NetSol's Domain management web interface
(it's on the left side of the page and says "Manage host servers"

If you have a hostname listed at the gTLD servers SBC can delegate the
reverse lookup to you. You have to specifically tell SBC to delegate it to
your DNS.

ok, I talked to SBC this morning and they have now
delgated control to me. The switched it from
NS67.Worldnic.com to my dns server 66.140.116.4. SBC also
had me create a new A record from my netsol DNS management
area call ns.insurors.com which is forwarded to
66.140.116.4. So SBC is pushing everything to
ns.insurors.com which is pushing to 66.140.116.4 which is
my dns server. So I created a new reverse zone
66.140.116.x subnet and created ptr record in there, ip
number 5, and still nothing. This is wearing me out. Any
other suggestions?

You have a couple of problems.
1. When I tried to run a lookup against your DNS server at 66.140.116.4 I
can't get an answer. Make sure you forward port 53 UDP and TCP to your DNS
server from this IP.
2. Your reverse lookup zone is misnamed if what you stated is correct.
Delete that zone and recreate the zone like this.
New standard primary reverse lookup zone, wehn you click next to enter
either the SubNet Id or zone name you must select select zone name, name the
zone "0.116.140.66.in-addr.arpa." (without the quotes) next, then finish.
Now create the PTR, IP # 4 with ns.insurors.com and IP # 5 with the FQ host
name of your mail server.

When you create a delegated Reverse lookup zone you have to create the zone
by the name it is delegated to. The Zone name your IP is delegated to is
"0.116.140.66.in-addr.arpa." Put your PTRs in that zone. Oh, to see the zone
name in the GUI in the View menu select "Advanced"

You can see this in the www.dnsstuff.com when you use the reverse lookup
tool.

Asking ns1.swbell.net. for 4.116.140.66.in-addr.arpa PTR record: Got CNAME
referral to ns.insurors.com. (zone 4.0.116.140.66.in-addr.arpa.)
Asking ns.insurors.com. for 4.0.116.140.66.in-addr.arpa. PTR record: Timed
out. Trying again.
Asking 4.116.140.66.in-addr.arpa. for 4.0.116.140.66.in-addr.arpa. PTR
record: Error: Couldn't resolve DNS server name/IP
[4.116.140.66.in-addr.arpa][11001].

ok, I setup the new zone as you suggested and the only
thing I am not 100% sure about is what the FQ host
name of my mail server is. Is is mail.insurors.com or
iot5.insurorsindemnity.com? How do I find out. Then in
regards to forwarding the ports, where am I supposed to do
that from? my firewall, router, ? thanks

You need to open port 53 on the firewall and forward port 53 to the DNS
server IP.
insurorsindemnity.com doesn't have an MX record

insurors.com MX is mail.insurors.com

I'd say set your PTR to mail.insurors.com and use mail.insurors.com for your
MX records' mail server regardless of the domain.

He said he did, but it isn't in Internic's Whois database. It may not have
propagated yet, but I pretty much gave him step by step.

Kevin, I did like you suggested and open the port. Now
when I go to DNSstuff and test
it "http://www.dnsstuff.com/tools/ptr.ch?ip=66.140.116.5"
I get a good response. However it is still not working,
if I do the reverse DNS traversal at the bottom of the
page it says my DNS server is timing out. thanks

Did you open 53 UDP and forward it to the DNS server?
I can make a TCP connection to your DNS server but not a UDP connection. You
need 53 UDP open, too. 53 UDP is the default DNS port.

Yep, I forgot to open it up for UDP. its working... I
can't thank you enough. I really appreciate the help. If
you are ever in a bind and need some help with cisco
router configuration or citrix "my specialties" let me
know and I will do all i can to help (e-mail address removed)
