I have a ti4200 - thought with my evil PC (Dual DDR400 and P4 with HT)
to upgrade the VGA...

Damn i'm dissapointed. Will never spend 400$ again on any VGA simply
not worth it.

Ti4200 delivers more than enought, at 1/5 of the price...

Never ever state of the art again...

What did you expect the 9800 to do that the ti4200 wasn't doing?
Upgrade for a reason, not just because you can.

Try running that card at 4*FSAA and 16*Ansitropic at 1280*1024, then you'll
have a clue what you are missing.

I just replaced my GF4 Ti 4200 with a Radeon 9800 Pro and being able to play
games at 1280x1024 with 4*FSAA and 16*Ansitropic is exactly what I was
missing. I'm pleased.

Poor you.

Enjoy your Ti4200.

I got a good taste of the Ti4200 at best buy the other day. I was able to
play some games, and they even had 3D Mark 2003 on there so i said what the
heck. It was on one of their top end machines there, so i expect things to
run nice. I thought wow, this is nice. I'm not use to seeing a good video
card running games, so anything better than what i had(GF2MX) is nice to me.

I ordered a 9700 Pro, and installed it on my low end 1.2 athlon, 266 DDR
iWill mb. I'm pleased to say that the 9700 Pro on my low end system kicked
the shit out of that Ti4200 on a High End system with P4 h/t. And i even
know that still, my system is holding my 9700 Pro back. It would be even
better if i had a good mb and cpu!

I do have a question though.. Everyone says their 9800 Pro does 1280x1024
4AA 16AF nicely. What are ideal settings for a 9700 Pro? What can it do, and
what should i not do to get the best performance out of it?

I don't understand ?

I had a gf ti4400 and changed it for a radeon 9700 pro
the difference is huge, not only in performance (speed)
but specially in picture quality (6xFSAA and 16xAF)
I'm glad I bought the radeon !

What are you dissapointed about ? is it just the price ?

Nahe. framerate and price.

My ti4200 delivers in all games I have - I'll check again in a year...

A 9700 Pro is probably on average about 10% slower than a 9800 Pro,
but in a lot of apps is pretty much the same, so you can run with
those settings too.

"all the games I have"....that's the key here. If you are happy with the DX
7 and 8 games you have now, and have no plans to get HL2 or Doom 3, or any
DX 9 games real soon, then stick with what you have.

Unfortunately I am a hardware nut and love the idea of having the latest and
greatest, or wanting it if I can't afford it, so I have a 9800 flashed pro
and am eagerly awaiting HL2. I loved the original HL and all it's
variations.

It depends what one was expecting. I've just spent almost 300ukp on a 9800 Pro
myself and I'm pleased with it. But if one asks the question was it worth the
money for an extra 3000 3dmarks over my previous 4600 card, then some will say
not! but it depends how much you value your cash.

In all honesty if one wishes to keep at or near the front of the pack then its
always going to cost big money. Is it worth it? of course not. But many of us
are not happy until we go out and buy it anyway... even though we know we are
doing wrong... we still do it.

Speaking for myself having suffered several heart attacks, I tend to give way
to spending urges especially where my system is concerned, or on my photography
etc. that's why I have a 3200 cpu etc. yes stupid I know... I've wasted
several thousands of pounds of the last few years but you cannot take it with
you when your dead.

My house is paid for, the kids are all grown up, and I'm in very poor health but
shit em... I intend to spend the lot before I go. <g>
Seriously though, its no different to my eldest son who recently payed over
900ukp just for a single stupid golf club... now I consider that mad! but he
reckons it was worth every penny, (he still plays crap golf :-))) A man has to
have his toys!

Life is too short, if you can afford it.. then indulge yourself. At least we
are getting better performance cards for our money, (supposedly) I remember
paying 310ukp just for a GF2 card and 352ukp for my last GF4-4600 card. Just
don't tell your wife... tell her it was 25-00 or something like that, as they
tend not to understand sometimes.... its a man thing. LOL

John

If that's how you feel, then yeah, you did waste your time and money even
going for a 9800 Pro in the first place. The best advice is to not upgrade
until you really need to.

For years I got by on video cards costing anywhere from $50 to $200 (CDN)
and did OK even as a gamer. However, such cards don't generally have a lot
of longevity unless you aren't demanding very much. I bit the bullet for the
first time this year and got a 9800 Pro just to see what it's like to be on
the high end. It was definitely a very nice thing, but since I'm satisfied
to do all of my gaming in 800x600 and 1024x768 and don't really care about
AA or AF, I recon this card will last me a long time.

A lot of people are still happy with their Ti4200 cards, which is great
especially if you bought it last year. It might buckle under the demands of
games coming out next year, but even if it does (again depending on what you
demand for graphics), that's pretty darn good in this day and age if you can
get two years out of a video card in that price range. By the time a video
card upgrade does become a necessity for you, I'm sure the offerings will be
more compelling than what they are now, even if we're only talking about six
months. But who knows...by then you might also need to look at a new
motherboard, CPU and memory to properly "feed" the new video card. :)

Amen. :)

There is no such thing, at this date of the world’s history, in America,
as an independent press. You know it and I know it… The business of the
Journalist is to destroy truth; To lie outright; To pervert; To vilify;
To fawn at the feet of mammon, and to sell his country and his race for
his daily bread. You know it and I know it and what folly is this
toasting an independent press? We are the tools and vassals for rich men
behind the scenes. We are the jumping jacks, they pull the strings and
we dance. Our talents, our possibilities and or lives are all the
property of other men. We are intellectual prostitutes.

Same here. Just put my 9800 Pro in 2 days ago and wow, been playing
things like Unreal II all over again with all the eye-candy turned on.
Looks like a whole different game.

Not that the Ti4200 was bad, but now there are more effects, fog and
details I was missing that make the game that much better. Same with
playing some Return to Wolfenstein today, Ti4200 was perfectly playable,
and was a good deal, but the 9800 Pro is at another level of nice. :)

Hmm, maybe you need to visit the optician ? Theres a world of difference in
the visual quality, but if mediocre is good enough for you then who am I to
complain...
