Restore INDEX>DAT file icon

Hi Ron,

I first uninstalled the programme I was using when I think it all
happened, which is WinDVD Creator

I then deleted
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\CLASSES\.dat
which, under "Data", was associated with video.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\CLASSES\.dat
comes back every time I log on, but I've managed to just delete the
"video" association", and so far it has stuck. I haven't, however,
re-installed WinDVD Creator.

I've done the same on my Laptop. I was using my PC when I think the
corruption happened, trying to open a file in a shared folder on the
Laptop through my wirless network.
However, although the icon has changed on my Laptop, too, the "video"
association in
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\CLASSES\.dat
persists.

Thanks!

Do you think it's safe to delete
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\CLASSES\datfile\shell\open\command ???
I can't actually find it on my machine, though......

Thanks!

.......Just to be precise, I too ONLY deleted the "Perceived File type"
entry under
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\CLASSES\.dat

What would happen if the WHOLE .dat entry were to be deleted, that is
all 3 lines (Defauly, NoOpen & Perceived Types)?

Then if you double-clicked on a .dat file, the computer would ask you
what app to use to open it.

TweakUI only restored the icons on the desktop

You picked the wrong selection. Scroll in the drop down box from
the "Repair" tab to "Repair associations". What's there might be
different on your machine. You probably chose "Rebuild Icons".

Thanks BoB,

Just to be on the safe side:
Did you delete the WHOLE entry, or just part of it?
That might just do the trick!

After highlighting the command folder, I right-clicked on default
which brought up a 'modify' choice. When the edit-string box came
up, I backspaced which erases the entry. Then OK the edit-string
box. The command folder remains, there is just no data listed under
default.

I changed the .dat key like the command key. My dat files now have
'no' association. If I want to look at one, I right-click it and
choose my preferred editor through my Send-To command.

This is the procedure I use for my particular reg editor. Other
editors should work in a similar manner.

BINGO!!!

I had the same problem (WinXPH/SP2) with the WMP icon for .dat files,
although in file associations, .dat files showed notepad (actually
metapad as notepad replacement) as the icon and would open in
notepad/metapad on double click.

I left the first key alone.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\CLASSES\datfile\shell\open\command

as drilling down one more level showed my notepad association, which I
wanted to keep.

On the second key,

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\CLASSES\.dat

that directory(?) contained a "Perceived File type = video" (or
something very close.) I deleted ONLY the "Perceived file type"
entry, and thw WMP icon was gone, and .dat files still open in notepad
by default.

THANKS BoB!

(Give it a try, Pesche, and let us know if it works for you.)

Hi Ron,

Yours was a little more involved. Strange how different programs
each got associated with our .dat files.

Glad it worked out.

Hi guys,

It seems to have worked out on my PC,
but not yet completely on the Laptop.

Thanks!

All I have listed is default. The data for default says "datfile".
NoOpen & Perceived Types are not listed. I do not delete 'keys'
such as .dat unless I am completely cleaning out a program.
And, again, how do I find
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\CLASSES\datfile\shell\open\command ?

I search on datfile and that is where I end up. Your datfile key must
be missing if a search doesn't find it. Here is my complete entry:

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\CLASSES\datfile]

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\CLASSES\datfile\shell]
@="open"

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\CLASSES\datfile\shell\open]
@="&Open"

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\CLASSES\datfile\shell\open\command]
@=""

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\CLASSES\datfile\shell\Play]

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\CLASSES\datfile\shell\Play\command]

If I double click on a .dat file I get this message, 'Error executing
the program'. But as I mentioned, I right-click dat files and select
my editor to open it.
