My subscription for NAV 2004 is up for renewal in a month. I am ready
to dump NAV 2004 and I am looking for a suggestions for replacement.

First a few comments.

1) NAV 2002 was OK. It caught all viruses on my PC and was NOT a
memory pig.

2) NAV 2004 in NOT OK. It caught all viruses on my and IS a MAJOR
memory pig.

3) Before NAV for about 3 years, I used CA'S Inoculate which later
became their EZ antivirus. It caught almost all viruses and was NOT a
memory pig.

4) In-coming email scanning is nice but out-going is totally
unnecessary.

5) I use: Firefox, Thunderbird, Adaware SE, Spybot S&D,
SpywareBaster, and a hosts file.

6) I am OK with paying for my AV. I want something that protects as
well as NAV, but is NOT a memory pig.

What are some good comparison websites for AV's?

What do people recommend?

I recommend Avast without reservation. 7 separate services that you can
select/deselect as to your needs. (Internet mail, Exchange mail, P2P,
Newsgroup, etc).

Perfect results for me with the automatic updates (signatures and new
program updates), it always does it without me asking.

Low footprint and not a resource hog, creates a recovery database if you do
get infected to restore corrupted sys;tem files.

The free version is great, and they have a paid pro version as well.

I've used both of those Steve. I used to be happy with Norton until I
switched to NOD32, and now I can use nothing else. It's the finest
program running on my computer, and I love it to bits.

I'm sure you can read the propaganda about it from all over the
Internet, but from a home user who just likes things to do their job,
NOD32 is the dog's balls.

Steve, if you already are using the free ZoneAlarm firewall, then you
can update it to the ZoneAlarm with AntiVirus (which contains eTrust)
for free:

http://download.zonelabs.com/bin/promotions/zaav/04050.html?AID=10391233&PID=1423285

Complete the online upgrade to ZA AntiVirus, then send in the rebate.
This is the integrated ZA with AV. I have this combo on a laptop.

Yes, it does inbound email scanning
Yes, it does auto updates.

Or (as posted earlier) get the stand-alone eTrust.

(P.S. I am not associated in any way with ZA, ca.com or eTrust)

John:

Thanks for the re.

Since I alrady use a hardware firewall, ZA is really is less important
to me than my AV. I use ZA only to catch trojans "phoning home". I am
leaning towards the stand-alone eTrust.

How is eTrust on system resources?

Yes on both counts, you can auto-update every hour if you want. Inbound
works on Thunderbird also(it's what I use).
-max

Max:

Thanks for the info. Can you provide some details on eTrust's AV and
system resources (memory usage).

Steve, I'm getting in on the middle of this conversation, and don't mean
to interrupt, BUT. I use Etrust. It works great for me, seems easy on
system resources, and gets regular updates.

I am PRETTY SURE. if you do a search on the Microsoft page, they are
giving it away for free. With a years worth of definition updates.

get eTrust when my NAV subscription runs out in a few weeks.
