Hi Jim,

Okay... now I downloaded most of the programs you suggested. I don't see
anything scarry in there. Here is what start up:

<personal opinion... and I'm not very technical so I have to explain it with
my own words>... A .msi is is an Installation package... right? Every time
I start IE, windows installer asks me for the "faktura.msi". This is the
excact messages I get when I start IE:

"the path *BedreWord/faktura: 1' cannot be found.

Verify that you have access to this location and try again, or try to find
the installation package 'Faktura.msi' in a folder from which you can
install BedreWord/faktura."

I do have a folder called BedreWord/faktura (translation: BedreWord/faktura
= BetterWord/invoice) but that folder doesn't cantain a .msi but instead 4
file which are:

dsofile.dll, faktura helpfile, faktura.dll and faktura skabelon
(translation: faktura skabelon = invoice template)

And I do remember I downloaded some invoice template and it might have been
something I installed. To be honest I don't remember. Anyway the
possibillity that I've done so seems fair and now I wonder... is the folder
"BedreWord/faktura" a result of a "faktura.msi" that I've installed? Since I
can't find the faktura.msi on my computer I probably deleted the whole
thing. If this is right I wonder why something like IE want to install
something meant for Office.

My system seems to be OK again (except for the IE/windows installer thing)
after I started up my programs. Office needed the Office CD to configure
word, access etc. I had to install Logitech cordless desktop and my screen.

What should I do now? Should I patch W2K and IE (SP4 and IE6/SP1)? Should I
try to do another scf /scannow (:o) or perhaps another "W2K upgrade"

BTW: a regestry search didn't show anything beside a word invoice template.
I think there is one in word... right?

(I probably wrote this before) Thanks again
Kim

Hi Kim - Sounds to me like it's trying to find something from your original
installation of the fakura stuff. Take a look in Add-Remove programs and
try and un-install it if it appears there and you're no longer using it (as
I infer from your post that you're not). Another alternative is that you
may have lost registration of the relevant .dll's you mention -
"dsofile.dll, faktura helpfile, faktura.dll and faktura skabelon". You
could try re-registering them and see if that helps before you try the
un-install approach of if you can't do the uninstall. Go to Start, open a
Command window, then enter "regsvr32 dosfile.dll" (without the quotes)
and wait for a success message, and then "regsvr32 faktura.dll" (again
without the quotes). I would also do this for any other .dll's, .exe's and
..ocx'x in that folder. You may not get success messages if it's not a
registerable component, so don't worry if it says it couldn't find an entry
point or some such. That may or may not help, but it shouldn't hurt
anything to try. I personally would try and get it off of my machine in
your situation. As for your upgrades - install IE6SP1 before you do SP4 and
update IE6 with at least 818529 and 330994 first. Please post back with
your results - it sounds like things are starting to get a little better
anyway. :)

Hi Jim,

I tried the various suggestion you suggested but none of them worked. So I
spent all night searching the net for faktura.msi and I found it. So I
installed it and removed it from add/remove programs... and guess what... IT
WORKS. YES.

So now I will update my IE and OS (I should install SP4... right?). Then
I'll go back to see if IE has become more stable. I let you know.

I can't tell you how much I appreciated all your help. I not very
comfortable when it comes to "tweaking" W2K... a little scared cos' every
time I run into problems it almost ends with a format C and a clean install.
Takes forever. If I can ever do something to help you... not with Windows
:o) but should you ever require help with designing a website I'll be there.

Thanks a million
Kim

Hi Kim - OK! Sounds like you've gotten a handle on it. On balance I would
recommend going ahead and installing SP4 since it cleans up many security
issues of importance. Some things to note, however. In any install it is
essential to turn off as much potentially "interferring" software as
possible, particularly ANYTHING by Norton/Symantec, especially any
Anti-Virus programs, and very especially NIS and NAV. See here:
http://www.mvps.org/inetexplorer/answers.htm#preinstall Be sure you go to
Windows Update after you install SP4 - there are several post-SP4 hotfixes
that you need. If you don't get told to install it at Windows Update, then
also be sure that you go to MS Support and find and install the very
important 823980 patch from MS03-026, here:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=823980. Lastly, if you haven't done so
in the past, be aware that after you install SP4, you can create a set of
boot floppies and an Emergency Repair Disk (ERD) (see Help) and do a repair
and possibly obviate the necessity of complete re-installs in the future
(they aren't usually a good idea anyway most of the time). Also, if you've
installed the Recovery Console, you need to re-install it after installing
any SP. Good luck, and post back if you run into further problems.
