Hi,

I have this problem with IE6 and OE...

Every 3-5 time I hit a new link on a website (doesn't matter which) I get a
"MS IE has encountered a problem and needs to close....) Very very annoying.

OE just shuts down with no warning and I can open it no problems... until it
happens again.

I tried to find a "repair" IE in the add/remove programs (windows section)
but I can only configure???

I'm on a P4 2,5 GHz, 1GB ram, 2 x matrox 40 BG HD, Geforce 4 MX 440, DFI MB
and Logitech cordless desktop.

I have SP4 installed and hotfixes are as follows:

KB823559 and KB823980

OE update(s)
Q330994

IE update
Q818529

Any help really appreciated

Kim

Try disabling third-party browser extensions (Control Panel/Internet
Options/Advanced) and see if the problem goes away.

Rick

Please let me know if it worked. If i gave you a wrong answer than i also
know that i won't give it to another person. if it did work than oke, great
that i could help.

Hi Arno,

I installed IEAK and took a look at the beast. As far as I can see this is
way beyond my skills. To be honest I haven't got a clue what to do with it.
I can see what it can do with it, but I still think it's too complicated for
me... so unless someone has another suggestion on how to repair IE I'll
probably switch to NN7.1

Thanks for your help though :o)

Kim

Hi Kim - There is no direct Repair function for IE6 in XP. Here are some
alternatives. They all apply to your Win2k case as well, Kim:

1. With XP you need to go to Start|Run and type "sfc /scannow" (without the
quotes and notice the space between the c and the /.) Have your XP CD handy
and be prepared to go get a cup of coffee - it takes a while. This will do
the same thing as Repair IE6 for XP but a lot more, that is find any corrupt
system files and replace them. It does not, however, re-register the
various software components (except possibly the ones it replaces?) AFAIK.

Be aware that under certain circumstances (Win2k before SP4 - see mskb
814510, http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;Q814510) sfc
can erroneously overwrite (restore over) previously installed files from
certain "hotfixes" which will then need to be re-installed. To check for
this, after running sfc, open a Cmd window and enter "qfecheck /v /l:c:\"
(without the quotes). If you don't have qfecheck installed, it can be
obtained for XP here:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/release.asp?ReleaseID=35468 and for
Win2k, obtain qfecheck here:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/release.asp?ReleaseID=35470

2. Another alternative that works on Win2k and may or may not work on XP
(but probably does - I've heard both stories), for just IE6 repair if you
don't have IE6 listed in Add-Remove Programs, then in Start|Run then enter

"rundll32 setupwbv.dll,IE6Maintenance"

without the quotes, exactly as shown, and select the appropriate entry.

3. If you find that you need to do a re-install of IE6 then you can
consider the following, I can't verify this for XP (I'm Win2k - it works
there, and I've had good reports from XP users), but you might want to give
it a try at your own risk. Again, enter this at Start|Run without the
quotes and be careful about the spacing:

"rundll32.exe setupapi,InstallHinfSection DefaultInstall 132
C:\windows\inf\ie.inf"

4. Lastly, here is a link to a MSKB article about re-installing IE6/OE6:

XP (Q318378)

Hi Jim,

I tried two of your suggestion. Repair and reinstall IE but no... IE still
very unstable and so is OE (now I remember to ctrl s so I don't have to
write this post more than 3 times :o|

I'd rather not try your first suggestion "sfc/scannow" if I have to
reinstall all my programs... about 20 GB of those. Lot of plug-ins,
webservers to config etc etc

There's a 99.9% chance your problem is one or more of these
third-party programs. Uninstall your browser utilities, one at a
time, until the problem goes away.

Rick

Hi Rick,

Which browser utilities might that be? The plug-ins I was reffereing to was
for Photoshop, Dreamweaver etc. No plug-ins in my browsers which are IE6,
NN7.1, Opera 7.01 and Mozilla 1.3. My favorite browser is IE but now I've
been browseing with NN7.1 and that generate errors too. That's why I was
wondering f it could be the network adapter or my mainboard.

Kim

Well... this is the conclusion I must draw. Been browsing for a couple of
days with NN7.1 and that generate errors too. So I guess it must have to do
with connecting to the internet through a browser/mail program, Because if I
use FTP nothing odd happens. I don't have anything else that freezes, shut
down or give me the infamous BSOD.

So now the big question is... WHAT

I just can't bare the thought of doing a reinstall. Almost 20 GB to install.
Not to mention all the site definitions (almost 100), configuring web
servers, calibrating screens, installing fonts (more than 200), installing
plug-ins for DW, PS, FW, Illustrator etc etc. That will take me a least a
week or so :o(

I have firewall but that shouldn't give IE, NN problems... should it?

Thanks
Kim

Hi Kim - Well, since in one of your other posts you state that you're also
experiencing errors with Netscape, then I would suspect more general system
problems (rather than IE6 specific ones), but this is by no means certain.
You can safely run SFC without worrying about re-installing any of your
applications. As I stated, you might (actually it's pretty rare) have to
re-install some of your hotfixes, which is why you need to run qfecheck to
see if any got overwritten. After you run SFC, re-install the following two
hotfixes for IE6 - 818529 and 330994. Be sure that ALL Anti-Virus programs
are stopped and as much other stuff as possible as well, ESPECIALLY ANYTHING
by Norton/Symantec such as NAV or NIS. (Symantec software doesn't play well
with others and should ALWAYS be completely disabled during any installs.
See here:
http://www.mvps.org/inetexplorer/answers.htm#preinstall) You can check
afterwards to see if they've been installed by looking at IE6 Help|About.

Hi Jim

OK... I'll do a sfc/scannow and see if that helps. I'll post back with
result.

Thanks
Kim

Wow... that really messed up my computer:.. I think! What happened was i
typed start/run/sfc /scannow and it did. I saw a process window and it took
about 2 min.

Then I rebooted and nothing... just the my desktop background color and
nothing else. Then I pressed ctrl-alt-del and was able to start up OE... but
no typing. I left the computer for a while (15 min)... still nothing. Then I
felt forced to insert my W2K CD. I chose "upgrade" option on the cd. After
reinstall I now have a computer that almost look the same as before. I had
to CTRL-ALT-DEL to get it alive (when I pressed C-A-D my desktop appeared
instantly). I had to reset my screen setting and when I start Explorer
Internet browser I get a windows installer asking for a something called
"faktura.msi"???? I'm not sure what faktura.msi is but I get a error sound
from the computer if I try to close the browser. I have to cancel the
windows installer. The exact windows installer messages is:

The feature you're trying to use on a network resource that is unavailable.
Click OK to try again or try an alternate path to a folder that contains the
installation package "faktura.msi"

I'm pretty sure I don't need the "faktura.msi" and when I cancel the
installer I get that very frightening sound from the box itself. A search on
my drives didn't find faktura.msi. I think it's Explorer that is asking for
this .msi because when I start IE (which BTW has turned into version 5) the
installer starts. Can I tell IE that it doesn't need faktura.msi... or
what's the problem.

I hope you see this real soon cos' I'm not quite sure how a reboot will
go... and I think I have to do so to see if that annoying faktura.msi has
gone.

Thanks
Kim

BTW: I'm very greatful for all your help. Thank you :o)... just a little
desperate.

Follow up:

I've now tested IE5 for a while and now I doesn't get the very annoying IE
has generated erros and new to close...sorry for... but it closes after
about 10 min.

Kim

Latest:

I did a reboot and everything went well but the windows installer is still
there. I don't even have to start IE for it to start.

If I discharge the windows installe wouldn't you say it would be fair to
thing some hardware is causing the problems with the browsers. NN7 also
generate errors.

I know it's a lot to ask but I'd really appreciate some advice.

Thanks
Kim

Hi Kim - Wow! is right. I've never had such an SFC result reported. I'm
hard put to know where to begin with that.

First, a normal SFC /scannow should take more like 20 minutes than 2. Did
you get a window with a progress bar? Did you get asked to put in your
Win2k CD?

The faktura.msi thing is very puzzling. The only Faktura I'm aware of is
some accounting type software from a German company called Lexmark which was
sometimes used by ISP's (particularly in Europe) for time-on-line
accounting - I can't imagine why you'd be seeing anything like that
(although - Hmmmm - do you have a Lexmark printer?)

You've got IE5 because of the "upgrade" re-install you did. You should be
able to re-install IE6 by going to %SystemRoot%\WindowsUpdateSetupFiles\ and
clicking on ie6setup.exe. You'll need to go to Windows Update and install
any necessary updates/hotfixes, (especially 818529 and 330994 for IE6).
What SP level are you showing now for Win2k? You may need to re-install
SP3/4 (?).

I think at this point I would do some basic checking. First, do a complete
virus check of your machine. Then, if you have them installed do both an
AdAware and a SpyBot S&D scan to look for malware.

Ad-Aware 6.0, Build 162 or later, here:
http://www.lavasoftusa.com/support/download/
SpyBot Search and Destroy available here: http://security.kolla.de/ After
fixing things with SpyBot S&D, be sure to re-boot and rerun SpyBot again and
repeat this cycle until you get a clean "no red" scan. For now fix only the
"red" stuff.

Are you running a firewall? What AV are you using?

Try some of this and let me know where you stand

Hi Kim - Here are some tools that can help you investigate your startup
vectors and try and isolate your faktura issue. You may want to try just
doing a search of the Registry for faktura and see what you find as a clue
to what might be trying to start. Note particularly any finds associated
with the Installer. DON'T make Registry changes without BACKUPS and unless
you're very comfortable doing so.

There are several approaches you can use to make controlling the Startup
process easier in Win2k.

1) If you still have access to it, you can move a copy of the Win98 msconfig
to your \System\ folder and it will work - just ignore any complaints it
makes.

2) Much better, you can go here:

http://www.thetechguide.com/downloads.html (XP Version which works in Win2k
just fine) or here:

http://www.3feetunder.com/files/win2K_msconfig_setup.exe (stated to be a
Win2k Version - probably the same as the XP) or here:

http://www.techadvice.com/win2000/m/msconfig_w2k.htm and download msconfig.

3) As good, but different, is to go here:
http://www.mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml and get Mike Lin's Startup Control
Panel applet. A somewhat more difficult to use but more extensive program
to do the same thing is StartupList from here:
http://www.lurkhere.com/~nicefiles/index.html, or even better, Autoruns from
here: http://www.sysinternals.com/ntw2k/source/misc.shtml#autoruns. Be
very careful about doing any Registry modifications directly unless you're
comfortable with this, and be sure that you BACKUP your Registry before
making any changes, so that you can recover if something goes wrong.
Changes made with StartUpCPL are less likely to cause problems, and are
usually a matter of just re-enabling the particular program. Another
program of this type that I can recommend is StartMan, free. You'll have to
get it here: http://www.pt.lu/comnet/files/utils/startman10396.exe, as the
pcforest site is, sadly, no longer in business. Another such free program
that I can highly recommend is StartupRun, here: http://nirsoft.cjb.net/,
particularly if you suspect malware problems. If you have problems with
suspected hijackers, you can look up and investigate suspect programs in
your StartUp lists here:
http://www.pacs-portal.co.uk/startup_pages/startup_full.htm (Recommended)
http://www.3feetunder.com/krick/startup/list.html (Recommended)
http://www.answersthatwork.com/Tasklist_pages/tasklist.htm (Recommended)

All work fine for controlling startups, however, I would recommend getting
both of the last two. They're both free, and each has some advantages. For
example, the XP msconfig also gives you some visibility/control over
services, while Mike's applet offers much better startup control.

Also, while its not specifically pertinent to your problem(s), you might
want to read and print out/save for future reference mskb article Q179365
here:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;q179365 which will
tell you the order in which things get loaded.

Two additional resources which have useful information relating to startup
issues are:

How to Delay Loading of Specific Services
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;193888

HOWTO: Control Device Driver Load Order
http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q115/4/86.asp

Perhaps this will help. Please post back and we'll keep working this.
