Blair,
This won't be any consolation to you but I had a similar experience with
Win2K and an epson 3170 scanner. I spent about 12 hours over 2 weeks trying
to get the epson scanner recognized by epson software. The problem lies in
plug and play referencing the wrong .inf file. I really did everything at
file and registry level to correct the problem I could think of.
Communicated with Epson and Newsoft. Used latest drivers, european drivers
etc, etc, etc.. In the end a fresh install of windows 2000 was all that
worked. As an aside, during all of this trial versions of Vuescan and Silver
fast worked just fine.
So, I don't have any solution for you but if you need the epson software you
might cut your losses (in time) and do a clean OS install or use Vuescan.
Vuescan will not have the neat one step copy and email functions.
Howard

I hate to point out the obvious but why didn't someone just remove the
offending .inf file if this was the case? If you were in the registry
then you will have known the exact filename of the .inf file the
hardware referenced when installing. Just remove it and re-install,
unless it was the USB.INF(system file do not touch). I have seen this
issue, and resolved it in Win XP just by using the Update Driver
option in Device Manager and pointing it to the INF folder (loading
EPSON Scan but referencing the old EPSON Twin Pro .inf file), it took
less than 5 minutes.
Win XP has an excellent Add Hardware Wizard, Win 2000 needs SP4 to fix
the bugs in the Add Hardware Wizard.

Sorry, lets just go back to the beginning.

Blair, did you ever say which operating system? I have assumed Win 98,
in which case follow my advice.
You will only see the errors you describe in Win XP if you have
'nakked your system... WIA support is not present in Win 98.

For all of you having problems loading your scanner in Win XP you need
the correct driver for a Perfection 1200. This is NOT on the
installation CD, the scanner is too old. If you try to load the CD
driver then you will cause problems, go to the web site for the
correct driver.

Bye.

I did. It was OEM19.inf in this case.

I was running Win2KSP4. In my case backing up data and reinstalling Win2k
took about 3 hours. Much less time than I spent trying to install the Epson
Software. I don't know what the problem is with the Epson Software (and why
Vueprint and Silverfast do not share this problem) but I know it is
unpredictable and exists. For that reason (realizing the hardware is very
good) I cannot reccommend Epson scanners to anyone.

Actually, this thread is about getting a Epson 1200U working. Windows 98 has
a different architecture than Windows XP. The principle on installing a
scanner driver is basically the same in all of the Windows OS after Win95.

There is one thing you might check. See if the Scanner driver is the Windows
XP WIA instead of the Epson TWAIN one. You can check that in Device Manager.
It will not be there unless the scanner is connected and turned on.

If the scanner is using the Windows XP WIA driver, it may mean that the
Epson TWAIN driver is not installed.

During installing drivers, if you ever get the Windows XP warning about the
driver not being digitally signed, Click "Continue Anyway". If you do not
"Continue Anyway", the driver is not installed. Windows XP will then use the
built-in WIA driver if one is available.

It is normal for Imaging Devices to go away when no scanner or camera is
connected. In XP, that is just the way it works.
Thanks to your help I have at last succeeded in installing Twain5. I had
downloaded it but for some reason I could not find it. I did a search for
the file you mentioned and found the zip file
So I now have all the software downloaded
Prestel Page Manager is the operating software and I can open that but when
I click the scanning button I get "Epson scan cannot be started"
I really don't know what to do next.
Can you solve this?

Completed the download. When I was asked for the Win 98 CD and loaded it I
got the message "The file usbscan.sys on Win98SE could not be found" and if
I pressed ignore other files are listed not found. At least I have the
hardware installed now and I selected Stimon as the logging module.
Looking at the downloaded file there were no files with exe extension.
When you said click filename.exe, what is "filename"
There are a number of winzip files but what triggers them I have no idea.
Also what files are required from the Win98SE CD?
When I try and start Epson Scan I get "Epson Scan cannot be started"
I seem to be going round in circles!
Help!
Blair

You need usbscan.sys from the Windows 98 CD. This is the function
driver for the scanner and is part of the support in the OS. Use the
browse button to browse to the CD drive then navigate to the Win98
directory on the CD. The system will automatically recognise the cab
file in which the usbscan.sys is located. Click OK on the browse and
this will return you to the cannot find the file message, but this
time the path will be %CD Drive%\Win98, click OK and things should be
fine.[/QUOTE]

I did that but I received a message that the best drivers are already
installed namely
C:\WINDOWS\INF\ESo7.IN

That is a problem I do not have any idea how to solve. But I will brain
storm.
I have not heard of Prestel Page Manager and no hits in Google.

Maybe you are talking about GMP PRESTO PAGEMANAGER 6 from Amazon.
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/t...-1518154-4048945?v=glance&s=software&n=507846

I can not find any information about Presto Pagemanager, except that is cost
$80 at Amazon.

You could just not use the button on the scanner.
Does not Prestel Page Manager have a command to scan pages?
Does this pagemanager have a TWAIN interface?

You should be able to select the Twain5 driver in Page Manager if it is
TWAIN compliant.

Maybe there is a scanner setup wizard in Prestel Page Manager to set it to
talk to the scanner.

The Twain5 is the twain compliant driver for Epson 1200.

Can you acquire with Photoshop or Irfanview?
http://www.irfanview.com/
Irfanview has a good TWAIN interface and is great at connecting scanners.
If you download, get the plug-in also.

The TWAIN interface is the industry standard for connecting scanners and
other imaging devices.

Is there an simple answer to this or do I have to delete the software and
start again?.

Blair

This is not so good. I assume that you are using Windows 98? You still
have not confirmed this. If it is Windows 98 then follow the advice
below, if it is not the don't!

1) Make sure the scanner is connected and switched on.
2) Go to Device Manager (Start/Control Panel/Settings/Device Manager)
3) Look at the following headings and remove all reference to the
scanner, or any unknown device:
Imaging Device
Other Devices
USB Controllers
4) Now close this and disconnect the scanner from the computer.
5) Go to Start/Control Panel/Settings/Folder Options, (or open my
computer and go to View/Folder Options). Make sure that the option to
view hidden files is enabled.
6) Navigate to %System Root[probably C:\]%\Windows\INF and look for a
folder called OTHER. If you find it look inside for any files that are
OBVIOUSLY EPSON Scanner files (they will be obvious) and delete them.
7) Go to Start/Control Panel/Settings/Folder Options, (or open my
computer and go to View/Folder Options). Make sure that the option to
view hidden files is disabled.
8) Now go to MSCONFIG (Start/Run and type msconfig). If you have
disabled start-up group items make a note of which ones because we are
about to change this (msconfig is NOT a start-up configuration utility
it is a troubleshooting tool, disabling items here is like sweeping
dust under the carpet).
9) On the General Tab disable Start-up Group Items and re-start.
10) Load the EPSON Scan Driver, do not restart!!!
11) Now go to MSCONFIG (Start/Run and type msconfig). Now re-enable
Start-Up group items. If you had previously disabled start-up group
items use the notes you made before to re-enable them, but DO NOT
disable ANY STIMON entries. If you use Msconfig to configure your
start-up environment you may have to re-think your strategy as you may
be causing some issues.
12) DO NOT RE-START!!!
13) Shut down the computer.
14) Reconnect the scanner and ensure it is switched on.
15) Restart the computer.
16) If you are asked for the Win 98 Cd (USBSCAN.SYS) then follow my
previous advice.

Use the browse button to browse to the CD drive then navigate to the
Win98
directory on the CD. The system will automatically recognise the cab
file in which the usbscan.sys is located. Click OK on the browse and
this will return you to the cannot find the file message, but this
time the path will be %CD Drive%\Win98, click OK.

Please ensure that you follow the above in the exact order as a
complete process (print it out before you start) otherwise there is no
guarantee.

If you do not have Windows 98 then your issue is almost certainly
because you have run the set-up utility to try and load the Win98
drivers on another O/S. So do not follow any of the above!

I downloaded Infanview and when I tried to scan I got the same message but
there was an item "Select Twain source" So I selected Epson Twain 5 and hey
presto I could scan with the driver!
I then opened Page Manager and again I got the scan driver.
Solved at last!! Thanks to your help. I am most grateful.
Somehow I was missing the last step and going round in circles.
Kindest regards

Great!
Is it not the simplest thing that makes us trip over our own feet.

I think that you will like Irfanview, It has a lot of uses.
One that I use it for is to make a quick copy of a document. Scan then
print. You do not have to save the scan if you do not want to.
I also use the Slideshow part of Irfanview. Read in the Irfanview help for
all that Irfanview can do.

Tim,
I am really most grateful for all the trouble you have gone to in order to
help me.
I feel really embarrassed as I have stumbled on a solution which CMS1 gave
me and I replied to him as follows

"I downloaded Infanview and when I tried to scan I got the same message but
