I have been using Forte Free Agent for a couple of years, and although
it is a bit clunky it is a good work horse. But the lack of a plonk
file or bozo bin in the free version is annoying. I haven't found a
good alternative that does have this feature, and also supports SMTP
authentication (unfortunately, Xnews does not, as far as I could
tell). Suggestions, please?

It does now. Make sure you are testing the latest version. 8^)

I strongly recommend you check out 40tude Dialog Feels/looks like full
version of Agent only it's freeware.

I just DL'd 40tude and installed. When it opened my firewall (Kerio) poped
up and and said 40tude was trying to connect with AdSubtract.

I recommend Gravity SuperGravity excellent newsreader and has all the
filtering and bozobin capability you could ask for.

My 2 cents

Thanks to all who replied. 40tude Dialog is just what I was looking for.

I'm running both Dialog and Kerio but that never happened to me.
Dialog has nothing to do with ads and other junk.

Hmmm. My copy of Dialog has never tried to connect with anything other
than the newsservers and mailservers I told it to.

Do you mean that it tried to connect with the AdSubtract website or
that you are running the AdSubtract local proxy and it tried to connect
with that?

It trys to connect to the AdSubtract local host @ 127.0.0.1
I have installed ZeroClick which is a limited version of AdSubtract.
I've never had another program call the AdSubtract local host.

My hosts file is:

127.0.0.1 AdSubtract # Added by AdSubtract for auto-dial.
#
# HOSTS file portion generated by Zeroclick begins below:
#
# You may add other sites to this list that you wish to block by placing
the
# 127.0.0.1 as below and then entering the offending server's name after
it. Be
# careful though - if you block a server you may end up not being able to
get
# to the site at all. If so, remove the offending line from this file.
#
# If you are STILL able to get to www.doubleclick.net and do not receive a
failed
# page error, then please visit www.nsclean.com/0click.html for
instructions on
# how to circumvent the windows bug responsible for the failure.

Connections to localhost 127.0.0.1 are not an indication that Dialog is
trying to connect out. I think if you temporarily clear the entries in
your hosts file, you will find that Dialog will still only try to
connect with 127.0.0.1, your own machine.

When does the substitution take place?

If a machine were to access www.doubleclick.net, when the firewall sees
it, would it see 127.0.0.1 or 66.150.161.135 ?

It has nothing to do with AdSubtract though. AdSubtract adds:

127.0.0.1 AdSubtract

to your hosts file, it's in the text that was snipped out.

</restore>

Also, I just installed Dialog to see if I tries to connect out. Kerio says:

"'40tude dialog' from your computer wants to connect to localhost
[127.0.0.1], port 0"

I don't understand why Dialog would try to bind a random port at startup
though. I assume that's what it's doing when it's trying to connect to
port 0.

127.0.0.1 AdSubtract

Since that's the first entry in the hosts file, perhaps this is why KPF
reports 'AdSubtract' after it does its rDNS lookup.

I've never been able to get it to connect to the Netscape server
(secnews.netscape.com). It always times out. No idea why.

Alan,
AdSubtract is a (non-freeware) proxy program that's kind of like
Webwasher. A program like 40tude has to go through such a proxy in
order to access usenet. Most likely you have AdSubtract installed on
your computer.

The Netscape server requires SSL authentication on port 563.

I use Hamster for that. Then I can use Agent, Dialog.....or any
newsreader, to get Netscape posts.

If you want to get them directly into Dialog without using Hamster,
and don't know how to do it, then post a question in
news.software.readers and be sure to put "Dialog" in the header.

Regards, John.

Thanks. I was just wondering if you needed something else. I can always
use Stunnel, which I have used for years with Agent.

Last I read, support for SSL is planned but not yet implemented in
publicly available versions of Dialog.

Dialog is doing way more planning that releasing. I'm beginning to fear
they'll abandon it.

Yes, I used Stunnel with Agent too. If you know how to setup Agent
that way then I doubt you will have any problems with Dialog being
setup the same way.

Even so, please read my other post on this topic. Hopefully that way a
future Dialog will incorporate SSL.

Regards, John.
