Really dumb question

In my contacts folder (Outlook 2003) I have contacts with 2 different icons.
One type is the standard icon that looks like a little business card. The
other type is the same little business card, but also has a little circle in
the lowerright corner of the business card ... kind of resembles a little
clock. I don't use any special forms (at least not that I know of). Most of
my contacts have the little 'clock' in the lower right corner of the business
card. The contacts without the 'clock' are my more recent additions.

Don't think so. All of the contacts that don't have the little extra circle
thingie in the lower right corner are very recent creations ... within the
last month. Many of the contacts that have the little extra circle thingie
are also fairly recent ... within the past year. I've been using OL 2003
since it came out.

Just figured out that the little circle thingie is the 'Outlook' lable. But
I don't know why it's there on some contacts and not there on others ...
escpecially since the creation time frame doesn't seem to matter.

I just modfied my 'View' in tmy my Contacts to add the Creation Date, then I
sorted by the creation date. I see that any contact created after April 18th
2005 does not have the little circle thingie. Any contact created before
4/18 HAS the little circle thingie.

I hope you're not putting too high a priority on this, Russ, since this
doesn't seem to have any effect in Outlook's performance.

Uh Oh. If the 'old' icon is the one without the little Outlook circle in the
lower right corner, then I've got a problem. As of right now, any contact I
create uses the old icon. Even if I create a new contact from an existing
contact that has the new icon, (Actions / New Contact from Same Company) I
stil get the old icon.

I've tried going into Control Panel and repairing Office, but this didn't
fix the problem. Any suggestions?

'old' contact icon resembles a rolodex card. And that the 'new' contact icon
resembles a rolodex card, but also has a little 'Outlook' circle icon in its
lower right corner. My Outlook 2003 contacts all carry the 'new' icon execpt
those crated after 4/18/05, which all carry the 'old' icon. I don't
understand why newly created Outlook 2003 contacts carry the old Contact

I doubt we are referring to the icons in the same way. Your descriptions are
vague. It is unlikely that newly created Contacts are using an old icon. It
is very likely that on 4/18 you imported Contacts created in earlier
versions.

It is not 'very likely' that i imported contacts or anything else. I did no
importing or exporting of any Outlook 2003 information of any kind during
April or any other month. I wouldn't know how to begin going about importing
or exporting, because I have no use for such a function. I create the
contacts (and, for that matter, all of my Outlook information) one at a time
using the standard menu options.

Let me be as clear as I can be. The icons I'm talking about show up in the
left most column of my Contacts list. When viewing my contacts, I always use
the 'phone list' view (View / Arrange By / Current View / Phone List) and
never any other view. Nothting else. When creating Contacts w/ Outlook 2003
I use no special forms of any kind. Contacts created before 4/18 have, when
viewed in the 'phone list' view, an icon in the left most column that looks
like a rolodex card and also have a little circle logo in the bottom right
corner of the icon. Contacts created after 4/18 have an icon in the left
most column that look like a rolodex card but with no little circle.

I've never had to export. I've always installed newer versions of Outlook
over older versions. When I bought new computers (twice) I manually entered
my few contacts via keyboard. And most of my contacts were created for the
first time in Office 2003. See, I used to use Outlook for only a few dozen
contacts. Then, with Outlook 2003, I started converting all of customers'

importing or exporting of any Outlook 2003 information of any kind during
April or any other month. I wouldn't know how to begin going about
importing
or exporting, because I have no use for such a function. I create the

time
using the standard menu options.

Let me be as clear as I can be. The icons I'm talking about show up in

left most column of my Contacts list. When viewing my contacts, I always
use
the 'phone list' view (View / Arrange By / Current View / Phone List) and
never any other view. Nothting else. When creating Contacts w/ Outlook

are
vague. It is unlikely that newly created Contacts are using an old icon.
It
is very likely that on 4/18 you imported Contacts created in earlier
versions.

execpt

Well since I get paid nothing, I'll take it as a compliment nonetheless.
It is disquieting to have behavior that is unexplained. What's odd is that I
can't remember any of the Contacts icons that ever had a "clock." Not even
appointment or task icons have a clock. I think the Journal icon does.
If you search your Microsoft Office folder for *.ico, does this icon show
up? If so, what name does it have?
From my memory Contact icons had one of three formats:
1. A Rolodex card was only seen in Outlook 2000 IMO when the WAB shared the
Contacts Folder
2. Black and white business cards in Outlook 97-2002
3. Color business cards in Outlook 2003.

If you don't have a lot of customized views, you can run Outlook once with
the /cleanviews switch and see if that straightens things out.

my few contacts via keyboard. And most of my contacts were created for

first time in Office 2003. See, I used to use Outlook for only a few

One other thought. In place upgrades of Office wreak havoc on Outlook
profiles.
Have you done any maintenance on yours? For sure I'd run the Inbox Repair
Tool on your PST file and consider creating a new profile from scratch if
you didn't do so after your last upgrade.

Thanks again, Russ. I forgot about the old black and white icon. Mine are
all color. The only .ico files are the standard color contact icon w/
nothing in the lower right corner. I also searched some of the .dll files in
outlook, same result ... standard color contact icon.

I ran the inbox cleanup tool and thanks for telling me about it. It's
something I'll keep in a shortcut just in case I need it. I also ran outlook
w/ the /cleanview option.

I am not sure that I am answering your question, nor that the question
is even fundamentally worth answering.

There were three: the ordinary contacts "rolodex" icon, the
distribution lists icon, and a rolodex icon with a little circle and a
yellow line. I creating an "Icon" view to inspect the icons in detail
and sorted by icon to see if I could reason about any common
characteristics. The little circle logo that I observed was a clock.
The yellow line was a little yellow pencil. A timed pencil. Hmmmm.

I then created a table view with just the icon, flag status, follow-up
status, and journal, sorted by icon. That revealed that the clock and
pencil icon corresponded to the contacts that had Journal turned on
(from an experiment I had initiated).

If we are talking about the same icon, then your problem is solved. If
not, the method I used for inspecting the icon and sorting by
interesting (neglected ?) fields might help. I may turn off
journalling and get a little performance boost, so it wasn't all wasted.

Now that's very interesting. I looked at all of the affected Contacts and
all of the Contacts that had the newer, color Contact icon had journalling
turned off. I turned it on, but there is no effect yet.

I used your inspection method. I use 'small' icons, so two icon choices I
see are the standard color Contact icon and the same icon with a little clock
in the lower right corner. Could the clock really be a very small 'Outlook'
icon ... a large O with a small L in it ... similar to Outlook 2003's newer
task bar icon?

In any event, I'm turning journalling off, too. I never use it an it eats
up system resources and performance.

You know? Arsenio Hall would call this "Something that makes you go Hmmm".

AND THAT'S A WRAP. You were right across the plate on the Journal thing.

Here's what happened. I've always kept journalling turned on. But I also
look at my contacts list in the 'phone list' view AND I remove many of the
unecessary columns (attachment, category, flag status, etc) just to make the
page a little cleaner. So I got used to not seeing the journal status of my
contacts.

Now, one of MVP Russ' suggestion was to run Outlook from the command line
with the ' / cleanvew' switch. This puts all of the normal columns back up
on the phone list and resets all of the views to factory status. Well, when
I look at the 'Journal' column in the refreshed phone list, there is a check
box. If I check the check box, the Contact icon changes, adding the circle
thingin (clock or Outlook icon, depending on your taste in these things).

So, PROBLEM SOLVED and thank you very much, ProfDD.

By the way, when you turn journalling off, get ready to take a coffee break.
It takes a while. I also use Outlook Live!, so the whole thing takes about
ten minutes.
