Hi there I just wonder if anyone can help. Vista RC1 on th ewhole is running
smoothly for me however every once in a while between 1-3 times daily the
system just totally locks up, no error screen just totally freezes. There in
so light on the HD and ctrl + alt + del is unable to work. It doesn't rectify
itself and the only cure is to reset the PC by holding down the power button.
Has anyone else experienced such problems or have any solutions they can
recommend? I have done a full virus scan and defender doesn't detect any
spyware. Any suggestions please.

Could possibly be incompatible drivers, maybe sound or video.
Have you made a correlation between what you have running at the time of
freezing?

Thanks for the reply.

The freezes are totally randomn or so it seems. I initially thought it may
be a problem with IE7 as I was browsing the web the first few times but it
has also occured while watching clips in the stand alone WMP 11 and even when
I was about to shut down the PC the mouse just stops responding and thats it
the screen remains the same I can see the mouse pointer and whatever was on
teh screen at the time of freezing but everything there after is
unresponsivel and as I said the only solution is to turn the PC off from the
power button and reboot. So I'm confused as to why this is happening.

Hello Marc,

I am having the same problem, have tried the 32 bit and 64 bit versions of
Vista, using RC1 64 bit now, but all have had "random" freeze ups that fit
your description. Ram tests pass and Linux and XP run well on my computer so
I believe my hardware is ok. 1 Gig ram AMD 2800 Athlon 64.

Disconnect as many usb devices as you can, especially mass storage devices
and see if the issue persists. There are issues with some usb devices.

The only USB devices I have are My mouse and Keyboard and they are wireless,
my Modem and printer. So I doubt these are the cause and as I mentioned the
freezing is extremely randomn. Is there another spyware software to work on
vista as my current one is incompatible and maybe defender is missing
something.

Hi,

Hello Marc. your not the only one who is facing this issue. there are
many others as well. I am not sure as i am writing this whether my RC1 will
lock up. Anyways from whatever i understand this is related to a buggy driver
in this relase of vista which somehow reduces your system to a very low power
state and finally your CPU stops responing. What i mean is your CPU stops
making any calculations. Its like you would have removed your CPU while Vista
is running. Dont worry there is nothing wrong with your system and yes if you
can send me all your Hardware details we might be able to send a technical
report to Microsoft about this(not that they would not know about it by now).

This is what i suppose and afterall i may be wrong. be sure vista`s next
build RC2 which i guess they ought to release as this is still quite buggy
will have these irritating issues fixed.

I, too, am having this problem. Do you think it is possible to turn off any
services associated with power management, or is this a problem completely
independent of power management?

Thanks, Mufaddal...your post helped make sense of my problem. My PC is
sitting here wasting space...at least I have a good idea now of why.

Wont help. In most cases its the way the drivers are written. I observed that
in case of Vista there are drivers to manage power settings for the processor
as well so it could be the proccessor after all however with the default
settings it would not be just a few but all vista RC1 users facing the same
issue. So its a certain piece of Hardware which has an incompatibile or a
badly tested driver.

The only way of fixing this issue(before microsft takes care which might
take some time) is posting ones PC Hardware details. This way we might figure
out which one of the hardware is common and which ones power managements are
causing a problem.

Thanks for the response.

My system is as follows.

AMD Athlon XP 3700+
1Gig DDR Ram
Geoforce 6700XL
250GB Seagate Main HD 200GB Maxtor Secondary HD
Nvidia motherboard

I am also having this exact problem except mines not quite random. it basicly
locks up after about 2-3 mins everytime. And im not sure if it's any help,
but i have noticed that when i boot in safe mode i tend to get about 8-9
mins before it locks up.

I originaly did an upgrade of XP, and then a fresh install, as some of the
post's suggested, but to no avail.

My System specs are:
P4 3Ghz
1gb Ram
80gb Hdd
NVidia FX5500 256mb GPU
ASUS Mother Board

The only usb devices i have are the wireless keyboard and mouse. and there
is nothing else installed on the computer it's just windows.

If someone could please help us, as this is very frustrating....

Many Thanks

Yep guys, same problem here - I've found that if i keep the CPU fairly taxed
it doesnt crash though - bit of an opposite to the norm! So media player
playin all my music, and several programs open seem to keep the revs up so
she doesnt cut out! Feel like im learnin to drive all over again! :-p

Same problem here. The computer just kept freezing until I disabled all USB
controllers. It hasen't freezed any more, we'll see how long it lasts. I had
microsoft USB mouse and keyboard installed, so I had to take an old mouse and
keyboard that I had lying around.

My PC:
Pentium 4 631 (3GHz)
1GB DDR2
ATI Radeon Xpress 200 integrated graphics
Realtek ALC650 audio
Realtek RTL8139 ethernet

Same problem here. Hope there will be a solution soon ;)

Same problem. IT freezes within two minutes of operation every time.
My system is: Athlon XP 1800, 1 GB ram, 256 MB Verto GE Force AGP video
card, Logitech USB wireless/optical mouse and keyboard.

Hi,

Most of us are using two drives wonder if one of the drives are
unplugged will it stop freezing.

Yes i have observed the same that too much of CPU usage does not crash
it. Again on some occassions it still does it. This is so very random that it
is difficult to link up to any one device

the last thing about this is that there is some driver conflict and the
way vista drivers are written. be patient vista is already working on build
5700 and that will clear off all these bugs.
