RAM question.

of installed memory.
Hardware only uses address space??? Not actual memory??

You haven't given us nearly enough information to tell you why the
computer is slowing down, and you haven't replied to my question "What
apps do you run?"

If the computer is slowing down, a factor *could* be your not having
enough RAM, but my first guess would be malware infection. What
anti-virus and anti-spyware programs do you run? Are they kept up to
date.

Not having enough RAM will *not* make the CPU run at 100%. Getting
more RAM will not solve that problem. If it's at 100%, it is very
likely that my above guess about malware infection is correct.

Apps:
IconCool Editor, WinAVi video convertor, Audio Workstation, WinAvi MP4
convertor,
Norton IS 09 fully updated, have tried all the free AV scanners & non are
reliable imo, also tried Spybot & that slowed down the computer
immeasurably.

Can't be Malware as this still happens after reformat & reinstall of XP.

I currently have 2 x 512MB RAM but would like to upgrade to 2 x 2GB,
running PC Doctor which lists all the hardware on the computer says I can
take upto 4GB yet running Crucial (sp) scanner it says I can only have a
max of 2GB, which amount should I accept?

Win XP sp 3, fully patched.

Thanks in advance,
Time Lady.

If you'll go to the reply by Brian A., you'll see that your board will only
take 2GB max. You can do that if you want, but I'd look through the other
posts to find why your CPU is pegging out. If you sort your processes by
CPU, which one is the hog? Then find out what program that process is
associated with and you'll find the culprit.

Actually the subject is more along the lines of "Can I install 2GB or 4GB?".

Thanks SC Tom will do that next time something happens.

Thanks also to everyone else who offered advice & suggestions.

No, it had nothing to do with what you that, it's the way theirs and many
other sites are set up. If you don't use the proper search terms then the
search returns either wrong info or no results at all. I had to modify my
search terms a few times for the model number that you provided before it
returned a proper possible result.

If you'll notice the model on the first links page is t3218.uk, not EG
761AA-ABU, however on the second links page the product number is EG761AA.

A search stepping through their product links didn't work due to the model
number not being listed, not even in legacy products.

The search terms used:
EG 761AA-ABU resulted in a wireless (EG614AA) USB keyboard and mouse kit.
EG 761AA resulted in a wireless (EG614AA) USB keyboard and mouse kit.
761AA-ABU resulted in a list of 79 products.
EG761AA resulted in the links provided.

He says that the upper part of the 4GB address space is used, but not by
your RAM. What he says is correct.

When I recently searched I used t3218.uk but that showed nothing, previously
the correct page was found immediately so imo it wasn't the search terms or
myself which were at fault. :)

If you knew the model was t3218.uk, then why in praytell didn't you
provide that instead of the product number?

Because iirc I was asked for the product number.

In any case I've now decided that I'm to buy 1 x 2GB ram stick & see what
happens.

Thanks,
TL.

There is no such thing as a 2GB Ram stick for that model. Largest Ram stick
is 1GB.
Perhaps you meant to say 2X 1GB sticks??

Which is what I gave Brian (EG 761AA is listed as the model # the other is
listed as the serial which wasn't asked for although I realise I should've
offered this also).

Thanks,
TL.

Nope I did mean 1 x 2GB, if a 2 GB isn't available from my seller who says
they're available in the US then I'll have to either go for 2 x 1GB or not
bother with an upgrade. :)

Again, there is no mention of a model number in any of my responses,
although I now see it can be read other than the way I intended it. I will
revise the request for others seeking help from this day on to have a
clearer understanding of it.

I am in no way implying anything against you, it's my wording in the
previous request and I'm taking the hit. I apologise for any
misunderstanding.
Worded the way I intend:
Please provide the PCs Manufacturer/Make/Model.

Manufacturer - Dell, Emachine, HP, Gateway, etc.
Make - Dimension, Pavilion, etc.
Model/Series - 9200C, 7125, etc.

Example: Dell Demension 9100C, HP Pavilion 7125

If you do the Crucial scan,it should recommend what you need(as you said

same site,online.
I've done it many a time.

Thanks Bod, should the 2GB not work then I'll consult Crucial again for the
1GB. :)

Thanks for the apology Brian, I also will remember to give full information
about the computer next time I have a question/problem. :)

Taking all the advice that I've received here I've decided that I'll buy 2
x 1GB RAM from Crucial. :)

Be leery of advice from a SPAMMER. They have a different agenda than
their pretense of giving help. This one does know how to put his spam
in a signature (after a sigdash line) as evidenced by his first posts
but refuses to do so now because he is scared of newsreaders that strip
off signatures. He wants to ensure to shove his spam in your face.
