The best is back and better than ever! Made me totally dump Winamp.

I've been using XM Player for a long time now. Dumped Winamp as this
program has better sound quality. Not only that, it's extremely small.
Entire program along with xtras can fit on a floppy!

It doesn't do any converting (wav 2 mp3), but it's great if you just
want a player without a lot of frills. The best part is that it streams
MP3's really nice. I stream from Live365 and don't get any advertising.

For those of you that have to have skins, tons available. Other
plug-ins include playing from within ZIP or RAR files. Plug in for
MP3-Pro encoded files and many more. Also a built in EQ and
customizable keyboard short cuts.

Just my opinion and what I like to use. Smaller CAN be better.

I am looking for media players which do not need ddhelp.exe.
Quintessential player locked up at start, just like most media players
do when I have removed ddhelp.exe

The only one I have found yet that works is 1by1 so I use it to play
mp3's.

All the others obviously need active-X to work, and ddhelp.exe is
coordinating activex routines.

ddhelp.exe is using realtime priority, and does not unload after being
used, and sometimes cause kernel page faults, so I try to find media
players which do not need it.

Every 6 to 8 months I download and try Winamp thinking I'm missing
something. I'm not. I use QPlayer and Xm Play, both are excellent. I don't
see why Winamp gets as much attention as it does. Highly over rated in my
opinion. The sound quality of Q and XM Play is very very good.

I love 1by1, no more play lists, very small works great.

This is a good player, but I have one minor problem...when I originally
installed it, I 'think' I remember some dialog asking if I wanted it to
eject CDs when the program was closed......now, every time I close the
program, it opens BOTH my CD trays, whether or not I have been playing
CDs. I can find no way to turn off this 'feature'. Is there some way to
edit its .ini file to stop this tedious 'help'?

At the very least, you should be able to uninstall the program, then
reinstall it this time being careful to note that question and telling
it not to eject CDs when the program closes.

Note that I haven't installed this program. I'm curious about it
though. Does it have a built in equilizer?

yep...I suppose so....just being stubborn, I guess..*grin*..(and, I have
a LOT of settings and 'skins' set up)

yes...perfectly fine equalizer....
My problem is, I have several nice players which I can't decide
between. dbPowerAmp, Media Monkey and QCD are all first rate, with
dbPowerAmp and MediaMonkey having databases that are awesome..

Of course, I also have One-by-One tucked away..and JetAudio doing things
the others can't., and WinAmp is still 'available'......*sigh*...it's
enough to make a fellow wish there weren't so many choices.

Compare this to Winamp.

- Many of the common features of audio players
- Plug-in-based
- Plays videos (though I've not really messed with this)
- Highly configurable
- Under constant development
- Can use DSP plug-ins for Winamp
- Rips CDs at full speed
- Not crippleware
- Not owned by arguably-evil companies :-)

Check out the Web site for more info: www.quinnware.com. It can explain
far better than I can. ^_^;

Seconded. Small program and not a resource hog. It can be used for
playing WAV, MP3, FLAC, CDA and other formats (with Winamp plugins).
And what a relief not to have to bother with a multicoloured, weirdly
shaped and incomprehensible interface cluttered with useless controls
and other nonsense.

foobar2000.org

And this has what to do with a software-update announcement?

It's simply an alternative player to the one refered to in the OP
(and, I guess, a good one too.) I don't see anything so unusual about
somebody posting such a reply.

oh...yes...I have Foobar also...and it IS nice...very plain interface
that is easy to read, similar to One-by-One...but no graphic
equalizer..Still, if you just want to run thru a directory, it is a
simple way to do it.
