political campaign it will come back to bite you! Of
course opponents will always try to make political hay out of these
gaffs and try to make more out of them than what was really intende
to
be said in the gaff. Al Gore's comment was a joke on the late night
comedy shows but hardly anybody in real politics made too much out of
it, certainly the comments didn't lead to Al Gore's defeat

When i was a kid...I used to read a lot of science fiction...
and pretty much believed all that stuff would some day become possible...

However back in 1964 or 1965 when Isaac Asimov mentioned a *desk top*
computer in one of his stories...
I stopped reading sci-fi.

I realized right then and there, that sci-fi was nothing but pure
fantasy...
and I better put my mind back in the real world >G>!
It's a good thing he never described the likes of an iPhone,
or a pocket computer with GPS.

LOL

now that you've mentioned iPhone...
it made me think of some bad sci-fi movie that was made in 1938 or so...
and the intercom system in the space ship was a dial phone!!!

I remember reading in SciFi about doors that automatically opened for
you as you approached them. WOW! I thought - how good would that be!!

Yes and by 1955 or so, some grocery stores had those "electric eye"
door openers...they were really cool.

BTW: here is some humor that really does not have anything to do
with XP...
but this thread is so far OT by now I figured I might as well throw it in

I remember reading in a behind-the-scenes book that after the original
series of Star Trek first aired, a hospital contacted the studios asking
about the technology behind the Enterprise's doors. They were told that the
secret lay in a hidden-away man with a big wheel watching the action. At
just the right moment he'd start cranking furiously...!

So the hospital must have hired a lot of men to hide behind doors I suppose

It was in "Foundation and Empire". I remember it well. They looked
through a transparent cover on the desktop to see the screen beneath,
meanwhile manipulating the 'controls' (keyboard?) out of sight. All the
while they were conducting negotiations across the desk with someone who
was unaware of what they were doing.
