Sorry about that, yes windex, though alcohol would be cool as well.
It's not so much the stains but so long as it's not getting on the
paper. There is a technique in the printer manual called roller
cleaning which uses paper with a fold in it to help pickup surplus ink.

I basically rolled up a cotton makeup applicator around some needlenose
pliers, and rubbed them clean while slowly rolling the gear to turn
them.

So, all the ink's cleaned out, I hacked it for CD printing, set up the
driver, and WOOHOO it works a treat!
