Problems using Nero 6 and 7

Just done a clean install of 5744 RC2. Everything's working fine, but when I
install either Nero 6.6.1.4 or 7.5.7.0, I get an error 'Windows host process
(rundll32) has stopped working' and 'COM Surrogate has stopped working'
whenever I browse to a folder containing MPEG files. Removing Nero
completely fixes the problem.

I seem to recall a similar issue being posted here last week

I have the same error message when browsing folders containing Xvid or DivX
encoded AVIs. I thought the problem started after I installed DivX Player
version 6.4.

Anyone know of a work around for this?

I get this corresponding error in the the Application Log of event viewer:

Do both of you have the Nero Scout turned off? I can use mp4 files and .avi
files and things work normally.

Have you used the clean tool to remove leftovers? I was going to try it,
but I am waiting for the time to run out on the demo.

I had problems with Nero 7 as well and someone here recommended Nero 7 Lite.
I wasn't aware of such a program at the time but apparently it has a modified
installer that is cut down and is Vista compatible.

I've been using it on 5744 without any problems. I mostly only use the
Burning Rom part of it so if you use/need the whole suite then you might want
to just wait until Nero updates 7 to be fully Vista compatible. Oh, and you
will need your Serial number for Lite as well.

Good news. The wait is over. Nero 7 Ultra Enhanced release Oct 16 seems to
now support Vista, well at least in the release notes it says it's Vista
Ready now as a new feature so I take it everyone should upgrade to this new
version (released last week) and test it on Vista.

That's the version I'm using, and getting the error shown below. The
so-called Vista ready version is unusable on my system while this problem is
occuring

Another thing I was thinking about was that I did not install the Nero Home
utility. I figured it was too much like WMC that a conflict might occur.

I didn't install Nero Home either, still had the problem

I'm using RC1, (downloaded RC2 but could not burn it correctly)

Nero 7.5.7.0 installed OK and I've used it to re-format DVD-RW's without
problems.
Only query I had was it wants to update Direct X but I just said "go
ahead" and it works OK. Nero video/sound player works OK

Try browsing to a folder containing MPEG files and see if you get an error
(or ten)

Well I've watched the start of a film in.mpg format and its fine.

That's not the problem...movies play just fine.

The issue is a driver conflict when you browse a folder with icons
that show preview images of the mpeg file within the icons. If you
change the display to list, detail, or small icons where there is no
preview image of the movie, then there is no conflict and the service
continues to run properly.

Switch to large or medium icons, or tiles, and the service will
immediately crash with an error when trying to render the preview
image in the icons.

This is a problem with the drivers provided from Nero. If you do a
custom install of Nero and do not install the video and extra plugins,
just the basic burning software, then Vista seems to work fine. It's
obviously a driver conflict that Ahead overlooked - which is odd,
because the default view is tiled icons which most people would have
set in explorer.

This happens with RC2 as well.

Bill, I've installed Nero 7 with just the burning ROM program and Recode
enabled during Setup, but I still get the error with MPEG files.
Any ideas? Hopefully they'll issue a fix before long

Could you give an example of the type of file to which you refer and
possibly a place to download one, or how you got it? Are these videos you
made, or something else. There are many different types of mpegs. Perhaps,
even the one you have is corrupted.

Any type of MPEG will cause the problem - I've got some from Enchanced CDs
(music video clips), some from DVDs and some were created when importing DVD
recorder discs into Ulead Movie Factory. It doesn't matter which folder the
files are in, or how many there are. As soon as I browse to a folder
containing MPEGs the error appears immediately

Whoa...I thought I had it working ok but you're right, the problem
exists even when I disable installing everything except Burning Rom.

No ideas...we'll have to wait for Ahead to produce a fix. I'm
surprised they missed this one...it's very obvious.

Thanks for letting me know Bill. At least I'm not the only one with this
problem (that would be even more frustrating!)

Well, I will try to reproduce your problem, but for now, you might take a
particular mpeg and put it in a separate folder and then try to browse to
it. If it locks up, try checking the files associations for that extension
to see what is opening it.

Since you say all mpeg, I am going to download an MP4 from the Nero site
which is a movie trailer. I will see if it locks up.

Clark

Well, the mp4 file worked fine. Any other suggestions to track this down?

Did you have any other versions of Nero Installed first and did you try to
use the Clean Tool prior to installing the latest version?

No, clean install of 7.5.7.0 and a clean install of Vista. The files will
all play fine, it's when you browse to the folder containing them that's the
problem. The problem only started when I installed Nero, after removing it
everything was ok again.
