Problem with an 80gig hard drive WD

I don't think yer problem is that complicated, Brig. I just think its
beyond your capabilities.

Just take the drive...and your problem...to a local shop. In less
than an hour, they should be able to solve your problem...or not.

I'd start there first.

But be SURE to tell the shop that they are NOT to even attempt data
recovery unless they can do so without altering, specifically writing to
that drive... otherwise if they fail they may not have only failed to
retrieve the data but also prevent anyone else from retriving all or at
least part of it... local shops can have employees of a drastically wide
range of skills, from very poor to very skilled, even ignoring the fact
that many aren't even interested in solving the problem, might simply
declare the drive dead/defective without much of an attempt then offer to
sell a new drive.
