I agree.
Another alternative may be the cableforum members hosting deals from
I-web
http://i-websolutions.co.uk/cfhosting.php
To meet the "5Gb" figure, takes it to the second tier - £1.99 /month
(cheaper annually).

Even package 6 (600Mb storage, 25Gb bandwidth) - £5.99/mo would
not be adequate for an "open" download of the ISO - on that count,
not even adequate for ONE DAY of the ISO

ACF's *known* requirements are pretty low (if we leave the ISO out of
consideration). We need about 15 MB of web space and PHP support. Email
requirements are virtually nil - one redirect for the PL link button.

The 5 GB bandwidth figure is a *guess*.

What happens if an I-web site exceeds its allotted bandwidth. Does the
web site go down or is there an overcharge? Can web sites be upgraded to
a higher level of bandwidth?

That depends on the host. With some hosts the web site just goes down,
with other hosts you just have to pay for the extra bandwidth.

Generelly yes but sometimes that involves upgrading to a different plan
with more web site space, more SQL databases etc, i.e. something that
you don't really need but have to pay for anyway.

Thanks Ulrich,

Nice overview. I was asking specifically about plans offered at the
I-web site - guess I should have made that clearer.

Sorry, I realized that only after posting my message and cancelled it
right away. So I am a bit surprised that you can still read it. Anyway,
I hope somebody will reply to your initial questions.

Most newsservers do not accept cancels, and you need to be extremely
fast to cancel before your newsserver has propogated your msg.

From their FAQ

If you go over your bandwidth allowance, you will be charged
at the standard overusage rate. Or if you
would prefer, submit a support ticket to enable bandwidth
switch off, and when you reach your bandwidth limit, your site
can be de-activated until the 1st of the next month. This way
no charges are incurred.

So it seems you can choose - but nowhere can I find WHAT the standard
overusage rate is.

It also appears that you MUST have an existing domain name to transfer
- looks like a free transfer-in, or purchase one through them - there
doesn't seem to be any subdomain or user directory option.
I've seen cheaper domain names than theirs, so that's something they
can easily be beaten on.

It seems to be a good benchmark price for well-featured webspace
though - a lot of cableforum users have the 99p/month package, instead
of using their ISP-included and zero-featured webspace - though many
have 55Mb available.

Quite a few domain names have been suggested - looks like the first
priority is selecting one and acquiring it. I hope that can be done
quickly. . .

While that's going on we can look harder at the choices for a host. I
sent my email address to guyon moree - haven't heard back yet about the
site he offered.

As you said, I-web looks like a good benchmark. Could you email them and
ask about the overusage rate?

Does anyone else have suggestions to offer?
