And if there is a
MB that works without software, with no way to control it,
I stand corrected.

I am running a MSI K8T Neo2-FIR. On that board, there must be such a
fan control, because the fan (AMD boxed) runs only at 2/3 of its
nominal speed. Up to now, I was not able to get this thing running at
full speed. I had to use Speedfan in order to raise fan speed to
100%;-)

Some other mainboards offer the possibility to change the behaviour of
the fan by adjustable thresholds for CPU temperature. On my board, I
miss this feature.

But, you still have a way to control it, via software. You wouldn't be
able to do that on a board with just a thermistor controlling the speeds.

Download the AMD PowerNow! Dashboard and you can see if it's working.

I currently have Cool N Quiet disabled in my BIOS. I didn't think it
would have that big of an impact on my processor's health, so I switched
it off. With WinXP 64-bit about to come out, I'm rethinking this. Is
there anyone using it and what benefits has it provided you (if any)?

Well, I did run across one problem with CoolNQuiet...

WoW thinks your hardware is completely different everytime you start it,
so it kills your video settings everytime you start it.
