Postscript still important for laser printers? How much RAM is enough? LexMark?

Thanks to inexpensive, high quality digital cameras

High quality digital cameras are still pretty expensive, I find.
, everyone has an
"Uncle Bob" who will do the family weddings for "free."

I know a few
pros who would tell their kids to find another line of work, and some
of them have bailed out. Can't make any money these days. Customers
expect perfection but won't pay for it.

I would rather say that many, many customers have no idea of what
perfection is. That's why uncle Bob is OK to them.

Also, nowadays, many people would rather not get involved in the process
of professional photography in order to give this special day all their
attention.

You wouldn't have some sample photographs on the net so we can see what
kind of photography you're in?
Nope. Not into "sharing" my images so others can claim ownership to them.
Gray cards, gray patches and color patches were standard tools in my
days so I have no problem understanding. I also understand the need to
calibrate the monitor. I just read about gamut, icc profiles and so on.
Here, my understanding is rather shallow. I hope the labs provide good
instructions :)

Too bad you're not in business anymore. All my problems would be solved :)
As I said, Costco is incredibly reasonably priced, and offers good
service. Although your mileage may vary depending upon the staff where
you are.

OK, I made a bookmark.

There's not too many chances that anybody will claim ownership to your
pictures if you only provide small sizes. But it's your pictures. You do
as you wish, of course.

If teh quality is good they are indeed "incredibly reasonably priced".
$1.9 for an 8" x 12" !!!

Postscript uses vector rather than the bitmap representation used in PCL
wherever possible - also many Postscript printers can accept jpegs directly.

Vector representation is rather like a Drawfile (eg Corel Draw) and bitmap
like a Sprite or BMP and jpegs are smaller than simple bitmaps. Hence
Postscript print job files are almost always smaller than PCL.

Interesting, but not significant nonetheless since I have ample space
for spooling. Tell me, how can I see the size of a PCL print file on
Linux? Is there any way to stop the print file from being sent to the
printer and kept for further use?
An exception might be with PCL 6 which has vector capability but as far ss
I know is not used by RISCOS.

Not too many people run RISKOS...

I'm not here to be a Costco promoter, but when I get good service, I do
not mind sharing my good fortune with others.

As I mentioned you have to buy a membership, but assume you were
displeased, they guarantee satisfaction with everything they sell, and
they will return your membership fee if you are unhappy with its value
to you. They basically sell the enlargements at cost and make tehir
money in other areas and the membership fee. BTW, they also have some
of the lowest pharmacy dispensing fees I have seen, and see the meds at
teh lowest markup I have seen in Canada.

And this is very nice. It's important that people share their experiences.

For the first time or two, I'll certainly see if I can find somebody
with a card. Unfortunaly I had a cousin who had a card and, after he
discovered he could get his beer cheaper at a corner store, decided to
unsubscribe.

Also, I wouldn't qualify as I don't work for a company. Pretty much a
completely ridiculous system, if you ask me. Also, since I'm single,
there's no way I can buy in huge quantities. So the membership fee
really would have to be for pictures only. Sounds iffy :(
