Hi,
I installed Windows XP Service Pack 2, which installs a pop-up blocker in
IE6. Fine, I thought, no more pop-up ads that keep me from browsing.

The problem is that sometimes I need the pop-ups to come up! I use this
computer for professional meetings in which I need to show my web work, but
the blocker keeps the windows from appearing no matter what I do.

Does somebody know how to effectively disable the pop-up blocker? I've tried
from the Tools menu, but the pop-up blocker seems to be disabled.

Also, I simply cannot set my security settings to "low" for the internet...
WHY? I need some of my pop-up windows to run applets, but the security system
doesn't let me enable them...

Can anybody help?

I, too, need my pop-ups back! I haven't been able to get aplets to run,
either, and I love to play pool online and also need aplets to kick in to
view my cancelled checks online. HELP PLEASE!

Hi Vito :-)

Try the following and see if it helps:

The popup blocker that is installed with SP2 is simple to turn on and off
and is turned on by default. It shows up down in the status bar of IE and a
simple right click gives you the option to enable/disable the blocker. One
nice feature is that you can enable/disable popups for certain sites rather
than just arbitrarily enable or disable them for all sites. See:

Internet Explorer Popup Manager
http://msdn.microsoft.com/security/productinfo/XPSP2/securebrowsing/popupmanager.aspx

All About Xp SP2
http://inetexplorer.mvps.org/XPSP2.htm

or...

You might try adding the site(s) to your HOST file so that it will be
allowed.

If these steps do not resolve your problem, please post back to this thread
with the details and any error messages.

Hi iamlakeview :-)

Did you try the information I posted for Vito? Did it not work for you? If
not, please post back and let us know what did not work. Or, better yet, you
might start a new thread stating all the details of your particular problem,
including the version of Windows and IE you are using, and what error
messages you are getting, if any. That way we will both be better able to
keep track of any replies and information regarding your specific problem.
:-)

If these steps do not resolve your problem, please post back to this thread
with the details and any error messages.

Hope this helps

Well...I'm not sure if the pop-ups are my problem are not. I tried
everything that "Jan I"
suggested and still...NOTHING!

When I go into Yahoo games and try to bring up the pool applet I get an
"error on page."

The explanation box reads:

Line:40
Char:5
Error:Object doesn't support this property or method
Code:0
URL:http://games.yahoo.com/games/login2?page=pl

Does that give a clue to anything?

If you are browsing a Web site that requires pop-ups to work properly, I
have two suggestions:
1. I would try holding down the Ctrl key while you click the link. This
will temporarily suspend the pop-up blocker and open a window for a link
that requires a new window.
2. Try adding the source of the blocked pop-up to the pop-up blocker's
allow list.

I finally got so frustrated and was getting NOWHERE with JAVA help that I
downloaded Netscape Navigator. And it works JUST FINE! Sure, it will take
some getting used to, but as long as it works it's easier than trying to fix
the problems with Internet Explorer after installing the new pak2.

Hi Jan Il,

Firstable, thank you VERYmuch for your help and interest.

I have successfully disabled the popup blocker for several internet sites,
but the problem seems to be that I'm trying to browse some web pages in my
hard disk, and it doesn't let me add these "sites" to the list, since they're
not actual "websites" :-(

Do you know if I can add a "local" file to the exceptions list? If so, how?

About the applets not running, I have installed Sun's java, but IE6 warns me
of potential risks in my own files! I know there must be a way to tell IE
these are harmless applets, but I can't set the internet security settings to
lower tha "Medium" It says this is theminimum recommended setting for this
area and doesn't let me set it to "Low"...

I can't understand why, even if I wanted to harm my system it would be
impossible! This is not the case now, since what I want to run is a set of
applets that demonstrate my work to potential customers, and I wouldn't want
to corrupt my own system :-)

The problem is that the fact that the files reside in my hard diskis
preventing me from showing them in IE!! No fun, really.

Any solution to this scenario?

Regards,
Vito.

PS: 100% agree about smiles! :-))

Hi Vito :-)

You're very welcome! :-)

I have read your reply, but, have just finished hooking up my PC after

So....let me check on this and I'll report back here soon.....'k? :-)

I tried much of what was talked about below to fix this same problem. This
is what worked for me. I have Ad-Aware on my manchine with the ad watch
turned on. I didn't realize that it also had a pop up blocker built into it
and that it was turned on. Once I turned off the pop up blocker in Ad-Aware
I was able to get pop ups again. So I would check all spyware removal,
virus, firewall, and utilities to see if they have a pop up blocker.

I've read all of these posts (and others), and have turned off all pop-ups,
allowed Active X controls, etc -- so that I can post a "New" thread to to
these Microsoft Discussion Groups. I have continued to lower my security
settings to the point it's probably compromising my overall security, but
still no luck. I can post replies to existing threads -- could do that about
three steps back in "dumbing down" my security settings. I have IE 7
loaded.
P.S. I'm not having this problem on my old computer with IE 6.

Do you have any third-party toolbars installed?

What if you right click the IE icon on the desktop and choose Start Without
Add-ons?

If I start without add-ons, as you suggested, the window pops up okay. (When
opening IE this way, I also get a red error message "You must enable ActiveX
controls in order to browse Discussion Groups" and when I click on the +
sign to expand the thread list.

This computer was purchased one week ago from Office Depot. I have not
added any 3rd party software, but I guess, it's possible some might have been
preloaded by HP prior to shipping to Office Depot. How would I determine
this?

I don't believe I want to always open up IE without Add-ons just to get
around the problem.

Thank you. Thank you. Thank you, Frank Saunders. I think you've solved the
problem -- IE 7 was preloaded with the Yahoo toolbar installed. When I
removed that, the problem went away. (I'm not sure why that allowed the
"Reply Message Window" pop-up and blocked the "New Message Window" pop-up
-- but will leave that for someone else to figure out.)
