After learning that the Pricelessware CD .ISO was not longer available
for download from the earlier host, a Friend of Freeware has graciously
set up a special account on his private server for a.c.f'ers to download
that file.

Please understand that this is a private individual making this
available on his private equipment on his private Internet account.
There no doubt will be occasions when the server will be offline or
otherwise inaccessible; there are also bandwidth limitations.

Below is the ftp account configuration information, along with direct
browser links to the file and its contents.

*****************************
this account has read and list permissions (as well as d/l)on the /PUB
directory only. I have a /PUB/UPLOADS directory with write and create
directory permissions as well and that will disappear if I find abuse-

other than that all the account has access to is the PW2004 CD
(including all the files ripped to the /CD-contents directory) and the
/1ZBD directory (which I'd love for folks to try and use:)

URL- ftp://secureftp.kicks-ass.org
port- 21
user- acf
pass- anon
add ZBD, read the installer notes <g>

a little more direct for our browser using friends-
ftp://acf:[email protected]/PUB/PricelesswareCD-2004/
ftp://acf:[email protected]/PUB/PricelesswareCD-2004/pw2004.iso
ftp://acf:[email protected]/PUB/PricelesswareCD-2004/pw2004-hash.txt
ftp://acf:[email protected]/PUB/PricelesswareCD-2004/CD-contents

I have limitted one IP to 5 simo connects and a total of 30 users at
once.

Just so there's no misunderstanding... I'm not the one doing this. I
merely asked the server owner if this was something he'd be willing to
consider. The result of that request is what I posted.

OK, do you want me to admit it or what?

I wouldn't know. But attempting to would probably queer the deal.

While awesome and all, the server is quite slow :(... Have you considered
offering a torrent download?

yeah, I cannot compare to business class serving. however, I am quyite
pleased to see a steady upload from my end averaging around 80-90KB/s
continuous since the announce here by MarkW.

I was slowing up the process till this morning due to some incorrect
hardware and software firewall misconfigs. It seems to be better now though
and not dropping so many data transfers on passive mode FTP.

TBH, I didn't know what to expect with a usenet announce- so far so good
though, it appears. :)
Have you considered offering a torrent download?

I hadn't thought of that, at the request of a friend I simply made a new
account on the ftp server I've been running for f&f for the past year+

Even better than enrolling to go learn from the college kids...it's
to live in one of those countries where hacking & cracking are taught
as formal courses, in their govt-sponsored school systems. Example -

http://www.wired.com/news/print/0,1294,42346,00.html

"When I was in school, in the 1980s, we were encouraged to hack
American software. We had to dissect the programs to understand
them so that we could make them work on our systems. So we say
we were the first country to have a hacker culture. And Russia
gives excellent technical education [...]"

I have been looking for a torrent download myself. I found one but I
can never connect.

Many thanks to you *and* your friend. :) Would you like any or all of
this information shown on the PL2004 CD page?

If not, ISTM adding the info to the ACF wiki would be helpful. That
would make it easily available to ACF newsgroup participants.

Hi Susan- I am that friend of freeware, so feel a bit qualified to answer
here :)

I have no problem with the above info going up at the wiki, however I'm
betting the exposure I got from a listing at PL2004 webpage would cripple
me... and will opt out of that one. I've been running this server
(FileZilla) for way over a year now from my personal computer for friends
and family- while I continue searching for an easy and free way to get some
sort of secure protocol going (FTPs/SFTP, encrypted tunnels, etc)

I really wasn't sure what to expect when MarkW asked me about posting it to
usenet/a.c.f, but have had a better test of my setup over the past couple
dsys than I have for the past year! (over 3500 connections and 3G
transferred with an average of 70-90KB/s steady:) so this has been fun as
well as a learning experience for me and I am happy to continue until such a
time as I get a cease and desist(?) or it gets abused, or, lord forbid, my
system gets compromised... <1/2g>

I changed the direct link above to reflect the file name change I did for
the hash file of the .iso. Also, to make it all a bit less crude I changed
the dyndns pointer URL to one easier on the eyes :)

HTH!

Expect it to get abused. In fact, you would probably do well to keep a
periodic watch on your logs...unless you are friends with the small group
that runs this newsgroup. When the CD first came out I had expanded the CD
from it's archived form and placed it on my FTP space so people could
download folders in one shot. The reason was because many people were
having difficulty downloading a CD sized file, were getting many corrupt
downloads and failed downloads, didn't have the bandwidth to even attempt to
download a CD, or simply didn't want to be subjected to having to download
the files one at a time from the a.c.f. website.

Several people here bitched and whined and tried to act like I was going to
do something nasty in the files. In actuality, there were probably on the
average of 35-40 people per day downloading files and folders from the
a.c.f. CD files on my FTP ...as well as about a half dozen times per day of
some ass-brained monkey going into the area of my FTP where the a.c.f. files
were and attempting to create directories and upload files and even attempts
to delete files.

So, hey, if you're going to host a.c.f. files for people to download good
luck and hope you don't end up getting your files trashed.

It's a great help. :) Thank you so much. The ACF wiki is here:

http://www.markcarter.me.uk/cgi-bin/wiki.pl?AcfWiki

It now shows a link to this page:

http://www.markcarter.me.uk/cgi-bin/wiki.pl?PricelesswareCd

Please add more information or make changes as needed (or let me know if
you prefer to have me make the changes).

Looking ahead - the newsgroup will be discussing a PL2005 CD before too
long. Would you consider hosting an ISO of the PL2005 CD with *limited*
distribution? That would facilitate the initial distribution to
volunteer burners and creation of a bit torrent download for general
distribution. (The new PL won't go online until January - an immediate
decision is not needed.)

Thank you again for hosting the PL2004 ISO.

Ok, looks good. I will add some notes, especially on ZeBeDee and how I have
it implemented. I also will be testing SFTP soon (I hope:) and will add
appropriately as that gets ready for primetime.

Easy decision, I will do it. However, being in the Army I am unsure of my
status regards movement overseas- so if I get the order to move I may not be
able to after all... said:

Not a problem so far. If it becomes so I'll post about it here and put
notice up on the wiki. btw, email
pricelesswareCD(at)redleg.privacyport.com if anything comes up or the 2005
CD gets finished.
