There is no sensor involved with the ink cartridges for this model. Just a
count of ink used by the printer from each cartridge, as Zakezuke said the
printer works out how much is left in the cartrdige based on how much ink is in
a full cartridge less the amount used when printing and when the printer does a
cleaning cycle. At an appropriate count the printer reports the low ink
condition and when a new cartridge is installed the count is reset by the user
as you have descibed. The count is quite accurate and results in very little
ink left in the cartridge.

Just wondering. As I mentioned, I put in a new black cartridge a few
days ago and the screen message asked if I put in a new cartridge and I
put a checkmark in black cart to indicate it was replaced so the printer
can reset. I printed quite a lot of text pages since then so the black
ink level should show on the screen that its used some ink by now, but
it still shows full. I know the color should show a lot less, but as
you said, probably because I switched printers and its the same color
cart, it will still show full, but the black cart was installed after
I got the new printer. Do you think that both carts have to be replaced
before the ink counter works properly and is the ink counter something
that often may not work properly? I think I can live without the ink
counter if I had to, but its a very convenient feature and I'd rather
not.

There are 2 counters. One for black and one for colour and they are independant
so, no, you should not have to replace both cartridges to get the counter to
work.
The black counter should be working now so after some black text printing the
ink level indicator should start to go down.
Do I recall correctly that you re-installed the software when you got your
replacement printer?

Yes, I re-installed the software twice. The black ink counter seems to
suddenly be working tonight and went from full when I printed earlier,
then later went to quarter full. The color one still shows full but was
transferred from my old printer. BUT tonight I have another problem.
The rollers are not grabbing the paper properly. I was printing 10 pages
of something and after two pages, it said "there is no paper in the
printer", though there was and press "Resume" and the yellow light was
flashing meaning error, instead of green light. I pressed Resume and the
printer started up where it stopped, but after a few pages, it did the
same. I tried several more times and its an intermittent problem. The
printer is trying to get the blank pages, because it makes a noise like
the rollers are moving back and forth, but it can't. I could maybe have
put up with the ink counter not working, though it seems to work now,
but it doesn't usually go from full to quarter full all at once. Usually
its gradual. But if it doesn't print when it should, that is a problem I
can't leave. I will have to phone Canon to get another ip1500 even
though its the last thing I want to do. The rollers have been working
ok all week and I cleaned them. My warranty is up with Canon for the
printer, but I first phoned them a few days before the warranty was up
when I first had problem with my old printer. This is not working out
too good.
Just my luck.

Sorry to hear that. I believe that, despite the inconvenience, you are doing
the right thing.
Canon have a good service ethic and I am sure they will see you right.

As discovered with another user, canon is liberal when it comes to the
warranty coverage period, and the fact that your replacement is only a
week or so old and already experencing issues. Sounds like bad
luck.... see about getting another one.

While this isn't their best egg, it should last longer than a week
without feed problems.

I cleaned the rollers again and the printer seems to work ok and doesn't
bring up the error message when the paper is going through the rollers,
though when the paper is pulled into the printer preparing to print, the
paper is a little slanted to the left at the top, instead of being
straight, but the printing on the page seems to look OKso far, as long
as it doesn't start to slant too much and make the printing crooked. If
I am lucky, it might stay OK. I will have to see over the weekend
whether it reverts back to the roller problem or not, and if I need to
phone Canon or not. I'll let you know.
Thanks Tony.

You sure have quaint sayings - "best egg" . Yes, it should last longer
than a week without feed prolems. I cleaned the rollers a couple of
times today and it seemst be doing better and the rollers are not
jamming, but as I said to Tony, the paper is a little slanted to the
left when it gets pulled into the printer rollers, so I'll have to see
over the weekend if it stays OK.
You are "Spiffy".

Lots of printers exhibit a slant in the feed tray (especially top feeders),
this includes inkjets and lasers. Generally this slant is corrected as the
paper moves through the printer. You are right of course to expect the print to
be straight but I wouldn't worry about the initial slant.

The initial slant was probably always there, but maybe I didn't look
that close before. But even when the paper feeds in further, it doesn't
straighten up as much as I thought it did before, but I will keep an eye
on it over the weekend. Thanks Tony. Your ideas are spiffy too (got that
from Zak :).
