I just had a look at Adobe Photoshop Elements 3.0 that came 'free'
with my V700 scanner. Is this really supposed to be one of the best
programs around (or even a subset of it)? I'm very unimpressed.
<snip>
I don't like any of the Adobe interfaces I've had to use. Too
inconsistent, way too many hidden keyboard-only commands, not enough
thought into mouse-only use. "Simple" doesn't always mean
user-friendly.
For $30 or so on sale you really can't go wrong with Paint Shop Pro 9
or X. They're much closer to Photoshop than anything else in their
class, PSE included. Slightly less capable in spots, much better
interface. For me, the biggest flaw by far has been a tendency for all
versions I've used to crash randomly. I've posted other comments about
PSP in this group that you can find through Google Groups. Picture
Window Pro isn't much like Photoshop but is small, quick, and capable
of sophisticated photo adjustments. In either case, to match Elements'
album you'd need a standalone equivalent such as ThumbsPlus, ACDSee,
maybe Picasa, etc.
If you don't need a Curves control, Elements 3 is sufficient for
adjusting scanned photos. It's just harder to convince it to do what
you want sometimes.
