If you want a good program for layers then check out the Satori
product.

Try to download the free version. You will see this text:

Satori PhotoXL 2.29 FREEWARE has been withdrawn pending release of a new
freeware version. You are invited to visit the Satori Store to download the
latest V3 FULL product. A small registration fee of $9.95 (£6.95) applies.

After some Googling, found this download link for the 2.29 freeware
version (on the 2002 Pricelessware page); it apparently does not work on
..gif files:

That is not freeware. Starting the program after the installation you get a
choice between filling in your registration number or choose to start it as
shareware (limited time).

I uninstalled it again immediately.
That's it. I have had enough of Satori.

I like this jewel too. Especialy the selection tools (circle and Inverted
circle) But I miss the Magic wand to select image parts...
I Also like the automasker. Especialy beacause you can create your own by
editing the *.gif files in the "Masks" directory.
I'm not missing layers as I never get them right. I Guess I'm to supid.
(well more accurate, I guess I'm to lazy to rtfm)

I guess the reason that I don't care if this program has such features
as a magic wand (which I use VERY often) or layers is that I have
several commercial image editing programs installed which have those
features. However, even if I didn't have those $ware programs, there
are other freeware programs out there which would provide those
features. The adjustable cropping frames with varying shapes alone
makes the download of PhotoFiltre worth the time, and when you add the
excellent interface which the program uses, you can't lose.
If you're dealing with images as much as I do, it doesn't pay to
limit oneself to having only one image editing program installed.
You'll *never* find all the features you want in only one program.
Currently I have a mixture of over 10 different graphics programs of
varying license types installed.
When I get my new slide/film negative scanner this week, it will
come with yet another $ware image editing program, which I most
certainly will install and use. Yet I'll always have my eye out for
other imaging editing freeware programs.

I cant read the manual in french, but found a link or thread and then
lost it. It had simple instructions to download the plugins and put
them in the plugin folder, and download some other files that you had to
put in a different folder. When I came back to copy the information I
could not find it anymore. I'm trying to find it again.

Maybe it was in my message you read this passus:

Copy the pmxxx.zip files into the masks folder, the
moxxx.zip files into a folder called Motifs (create it), the .pfl
files into the plugins folder, the pfs files into the selection
folder, the bmp files into the vignettes folder.

Yes ThankYou I don't have time to install, setup and play with the
program right now, so I'm going to copy that to a text file and keep it
in my downloads folder. This program is getting alot of publicity, even
Chris Pirillo from Lockergnome, formerly of TechTV is talking about it.
I expect that before long there will be English translations and forums
for PhotoFiltre.

In the last version (5.3), Antonio renamed the 'Motifs' folder in a
'Pattern' one.

Good, that simplifies things. So I move all files from Motifs into Patterns
and delete the Motifs folder.

The registration number was originally on the site.

Sorry for that. I hadn't installed it so didn't know the details.

A very polished little graphics editor. Had a good look round, it
follows the Photoshop way of doing things in many respects.
A good range of tools and preset/adjustable effects.
The only thing it lacks, as far as I can see, is layers.

It looks like it also lacks support for Photoshop plugins. :(
